Public defenders will represent murder suspects

Two capital murder suspects had their initial hearings inLincoln County Justice Court Friday, and DNA tests have produced anover 99 percent confirmation of the victim’s identity, authoritiessaid.
The public defender’s office was assigned to represent JerrardT. Cook, 18, of 2123 Madison Road, and Cearic A. Barnes, 18, of 830Beauregard St., as they face capital murder, car jacking, arson andconspiracy charges in connection with the death of Marvin Durr,whose burned car was found Tuesday morning on South WashingtonStreet.
“They’ll be bound over for the grand jury, which comes back Aug.27,” said Lincoln County Sheriff Lynn Boyte.
Public Defender Lesa Baker was assigned to represent Cook, whois also facing a burglary charge in the case, and fellow PublicDefender Gus Sermos was assigned to represent Barnes. With no bondset, both suspects will remain in the Lincoln County Jail, Boytesaid.
Meanwhile, Lincoln County Coroner Clay McMorris said DNA testsof blood samples from the body and from the Rev. and Mrs. JerryDurr have produced a 99.15 percent probability that the victim wastheir son, Marvin.
McMorris said the tests were done Wednesday in Brandon by Dr. BoScalls and results came back Saturday. State pathologist Dr. StevenHayne was wrapping up an autopsy and results were expected shortly,McMorris said.
Funeral arrangements for Marvin Durr are under the direction ofWilliams Mortuary. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Alexander JuniorHigh School auditorium.
