Leggett hurls 4-hitter; Thomas hits 3-run HR, Brook tops Poplarville

Jacob Leggett pitched a 4-hitter Tuesday night and led theBrookhaven Brakemen to a 4-2 victory over the Poplarville Rivercatson Brookhaven Academy’s diamond. The Brakemen got a 5th-inning,3-run homer from second baseman Josh Thoms to secure the CottonState League victory.

Brookhaven concludes the first half of the CSL season with an8-11 record. The Brakemen play at Hattiesburg Thursday night andhost Poplarville Friday night at 6:30 as the second half of theseason gets under way.

Leggett, from Bogue Chitto, will be a freshman at Copiah-LincolnCommunity College this fall. Against Poplarville last night, hestruck out 6 batters, didn’t issue a base on balls and gave up 2runs on 4 hits.

Thoms, a rising sophomore at Mississippi State, hit his thirdhomer last night with Vance Windom and Joey Sullivan aboard. Itbroke a 1-1 deadlock with the CSL-leading Rivercats.

In the third inning, Brookhaven went up 1-0 on an RBI single byThoms which scored Sullivan. Jacob Blakeney and Sullivan both haddoubles in the win. Catcher Aaron Oberschmidt singled twice. SethLofton singled.

Andy Harper started on the mound for Poplarville. He wasreplaced by Daniel Clark in the sixth.

Ryan Hughes hit a long solo homer off of Leggett in the fourth,during a light rain.
