Bass, Dunaway play in slowpitch star wars

It’s an all-star weekend for Ginny Dunaway of Brookhaven, HolliBass of West Lincoln and Robbi Dampier of Lawrence County. They areplaying for the South squad in Saturday’s Mississippi Associationof Coaches Slowpitch Softball All-Star Games at Raymond HighSchool.

The best-of-three series starts at 5 p.m. Two fastpitch all-stargames will start the day at 12 noon on the Hinds Community Collegefield in Raymond.

Ginny Dunaway, a veteran at second base, posted a .412 battingaverage as a senior, helping the Lady Panthers to a 17-14worksheet, the Division 6-4A championship and the second round ofthe state playoffs. Also a standout in fastpitch, she has signed ascholarship with Copiah-Lincoln Community College. She stole 16bases in fastpitch and batted .313.

“Ginny is a leader on and off the field,” said Brookhaven coachLisa Covington. “She’s an outstanding player and a hard worker.She’s exceptional on defense and hits the ball well, too.”

Named to The Daily Leader’s All-Area Slowpitch and Fastpitchteams, Dunaway was recognized as Most Valuable Defensive Player onthe fastpitch squad.

Robbi Dampier, a shortstop, roamed the infield for LawrenceCounty and batted .440. She helped lead Coach Patsy Sandifer’s LadyCougars to the Final Four of the Class 4A state playoffs last fall,earning All-Area honors. They posted a 21-9 worksheet.

Holli Bass, a first baseman from West Lincoln, batted .533 as asenior. She hit 1 homer, 2 triples, 7 doubles and accounted for ateam-leading 32 RBI.

“Holli had our best batting average,” said West Lincoln coachAndrew Redd. “In fact, for the past three years. She was my numberfour batter in our lineup and she had numerous extra-base hits forus.

“She really worked hard this year,” Redd continued. “She helpedus have a real successful season.”

The Lady Bears finished 25-10 and advanced to the South Statesemifinals, losing to Nanih Waiya, an eventual state finalist. Basswas named to the DL’s All-Area squad.

Bass is solid at first base. “She had very few errors,” saidRedd. “She did a real good job at first.”

Coaching the South slowpitch team are Mark Fanning of St.Andrew’s and Lucy Young of Warren Central. North coaches are MitchHathock of Hatley and Paul Webb of Smithville.
