Brook 14s shut out Copiah in first round

SUMMIT – Three pitchers combined for a 3-hit shutout and theBrookhaven All-Stars whipped Copiah County 7-0 Friday night in theopening round of the Dixie Boys District Four Tournament.Brookhaven also got a sixth-inning, solo home run from SteveCovington to put an exclamation point on the victory.

Brookhaven was scheduled to play the winner of theSummit-Natchez game Saturday night at Windsor Gay Youth Complex,weather permitting. The game was rained out Friday night and resetfor Saturday afternoon. Copiah was scheduled to play the loser.

Patrick Holcomb started on the mound for Brookhaven Friday nightand went 3 innings. He struck out 2 batters, gave up 2 hits and didnot issue a base on balls.

Tyler Williford replaced Holcomb in the fourth and hurled 3frames. He fanned 4 batters and walked 3, allowing 1 hit. Willifordworked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, taking outCopiah Ben Berch on a called third strike.

Seth Davis pitched the seventh, fanning 1 and walking 1.

“We have a sound defensive team and our pitching is solid,” saidBrookhaven head coach Mark Davis. “We hit the ball pretty good,too.”

Brookhaven finished with 7 hits off losing pitcher BrockCampbell who went the distance for Copiah. A 2-RBI double by SethDavis in the fifth gave the slender first baseman 2 hits on thenight.

“Campbell is a good pitcher,” said Davis. “He pitched against usin our league. He kept the batters off balance.”

Campbell struck out 9 batters and walked 3.

On a hot, humid night, Brookhaven took a 1-0 lead in the top ofthe first inning, as Williford singled and Mason Warren provided anRBI double.

Copiah committed 3 errors in the second inning and Brookhavencapitalized, scoring 2 runs as Corey Puckett and Covington camehome, making it 3-0.

In the fourth, Covington slapped a single over the third basebag to score Paul Davis with the fourth run of the game.

Seth Davis smashed a 2-RBI double to right-center in the fifth,scoring Williford and Chance Peets who had walked. Brookhaven led6-zip. Brookhaven also got a pinch-hit double from Brent Fielder inthe seventh.

Copiah got 2 hits from second baseman Burnell Teasley and asingle from Berch.
