After felony charges were reduced to misdemeanors, a formerBrookhaven High School softball coach pleaded guilty Monday toeight counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Aurelio Quinn, 25, of 726 Lipsey St., had been charged withthree felony counts of attempted sexual battery, one felony countof touching, handling or feeling a child for lustful purposes andfour misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of aminor. However, the more serious charges were lowered during a pleaagreement reached Monday.

“We evaluated the case and the DA’s office extended this offer,”said Joe Fernald, Quinn’s attorney. “It was my client’s decision toaccept the plea.”

Assistant District Attorney Diane Jones said she had no commentat this juncture in the case.

Quinn, the former assistant fast pitch softball coach, isscheduled to be sentenced Monday, Aug. 5, before Judge KeithStarrett. Sentencing was delayed in order to notify victims andgive them an opportunity to speak during sentencing.

The DA’s sentencing recommendation for Quinn includes a one-yearsentence on each count, all suspended for five years probation, anda fine at the court’s discretion.

Another aspect of the sentencing recommendation is for Quinn tohave his teaching license suspended, and it can never be reinstatedin Mississippi. He is also to seek counseling for inappropriatesexual behavior.

Quinn was one of two BHS coaches indicted in May after theDistrict Attorney’s Office received a complaint about allegedsexual harassment and inappropriate touching of students inFebruary.

Ronald Gill, 49, of 1582 Calvary Dr., is facing three counts oftouching, handling or feeling a child for lustful purposes. Atentative trial date of Sept. 24 has been set in his case.
