Residents in the Lincoln County School District will determinetomorrow during a $3.8 million bond election whether the districtcan move forward with plans to improve each of its fourcampuses.
Passage of the bond issue will require a majority vote of 60percent plus one.
Only county residents who live in the school district areeligible to vote at the established voting precincts.
Voting precincts participating in the special election are: EastLincoln, Forestry, Heucks Retreat, Little Bahalia, Montgomery, NewSight, Bogue Chitto, Enterprise, Norfield, Old Brook, Ruth,Arlington, Johnson, Johnson Grove, West Lincoln, Caseyville,Lipsey, Loyd Star, Old Red Star, Vaughn and Zetus.
Voters in some of the precincts may not be eligible because theyfall in the Brookhaven School District.
Superintendent Perry Miller said he would rather not speculateon the result of the bond election, but encouraged all eligiblecounty residents to vote.
“Let me remind everyone that it is crucial to the success of thebond that they remember to vote,” Miller said. “Education is thefuture. A sound investment today will ensure a successful tomorrowfor the youth of our county.”
The tax increase caused by the bond issue would be minimal,Miller said.
Based on a conservative estimate, the owner of a $50,000 houseand a $10,000 car would pay approximately $38 more in taxesannually, and the amount would decrease as the assessed value ofproperty in the district increases each year.
In addition, residents who are disabled or over the age of 65are exempt from taxes for the bond issue on the value of theirhouse, up to $75,000.
The bond would essentially cover a new classroom building on theLoyd Star, Enterprise and West Lincoln campuses; a new cafeteriabuilding on the Bogue Chitto campus; and a new office complex onthe Enterprise campus with renovations to add office space at WestLincoln.
Other improvements include updating equipment and adding twoclassrooms on the Bogue Chitto campus and demolishing buildingsbuilt in the 1930s on the Loyd Star campus and an old gym on theWest Lincoln campus.
The old cafeteria on the Bogue Chitto campus will be keptavailable for future needs, Miller said, possibly a band hall ormore classrooms. Two new classrooms are included in the newcafeteria building.
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
