Lady Wolves win; Co-Lin men stumble

GOODMAN – Sophomore guard Tiania Burns pumped in a game-high 33points to spark the undefeated Co-Lin Lady Wolves to an 86-54 winover the Holmes Lady Bulldogs Thursday night. Burns also pulleddown six rebounds and had two assists.

In the men’s game, sophomore guard Jerimie Collier fired in 16points in the Wolves 75-62 loss at the hands of the 4-1Bulldogs.

The Holmes women held a 1-point lead over Co-Lin around the10-minute mark when the Lady Wolves exploded for a 15-0 run for a28-14 lead with 6:39 left in the first half according to Co-Linwomen’s head coach Gwyn Young.

At halftime, the Lady Wolves led 44-26 over the Lady Bulldogs(2-3).

“Our defense was basically good for the game,” said Young. “Butwe didn’t rebound and let them have to many second shots. We hadgood support from our bench with 27 points and 16 rebounds.

Adding support in the 4-0 Lady Wolves’ win with 10 points, ninerebounds and three blocked shots was sophomore forward ShaquitaSmith.

Young added that Loretta Martin had seven points, eight reboundsand three steals and Ayme Beeson had seven points and 10 assists.Collecting six rebounds was Lindsay Altman.

Latrize Rone led Holmes with 16 points. Melissa Winters finishedwith 11 points and eight rebounds.

Holmes 75, Co-Lin 62

With 6:53 left in the second half, Co-Lin (1-3) tied the game at50-50. The Wolves were unable to take care of the basketball andturned it over giving the Bulldogs eight straight points.

At halftime, Holmes led Co-Lin 33-26.

“We were unable to make open shots or free throws during thefirst half (5-12 free throws),” stated Co-Lin men’s coach DennisSims. “Except for a few trips throughout the game, I saw some goodthins defensively. Offensively, we have to be patient andexecute.

Sophomore guard Jason Scott netted 14 points, led off thebackboards with eight rebounds and had three assists.

“Off the bench, Zach Baldwin gave the Wolves a lift with ninepoints, three assists and two steals,” added Sims.

Co-Lin returns home Monday night to Mullen Gymnasium to hostMississippi Delta. The women begin play at 6 p.m.
