Burns pumps in 43 points; Lady Wolves dump Delta

WESSON – Co-Lin sophomore guard Tiania Burns is a nightmare formost women’s basketball teams, especially the Mississippi DeltaLady Trojans.
Monday night in Mullen Gymnasium, Burns pumped in a game-high 43points on her way to leading the undefeated Lady Wolves to a 79-64win over the Lady Trojans. Burns also had eight rebounds, fourassists and three steals.
It was the second win by Co-Lin over Delta this season. In theirearlier meeting on Nov. 9, Burns led the Lady Wolves with 34 pointsin a 74-56 victory.
The Lady Wolves improved to 5-0 on the season. Coach BurnadetteMcDonald’s Lady Trojans fell to 2-3.
Last night, Burns also collected eight rebounds, made threesteals and had four assists as the only Co-Lin player in doubledigits.
The Lady Wolves (5-0) opened the game with an 8-0 lead but theLady Trojans came back to take a 9-8 lead with 12:59 left in thefirst half. Delta tied the game at 19-all with 732 left untilhalftime. Burns nailed two free throws and sophomore forwardLindsay Altman hit a jumper for a 23-19 lead and the Lady Wolvesnever looked back as they went on a 15-4 run before the end of thefirst half.
At halftime, Co-Lin led Delta 38-23.
“We didn’t attack their zone very well,” said Co-Lin women’shead coach Gwyn Young after the win. “We made a couple of good runsoffensively, We were able to run down the court and get somethingoffensively.”
In the second half, the Lady Trojans cut the deficit to sevenpoints once but were unable to get any closer as the Lady Wolvesresponded. Delta sophomore guard Saprina Reed hit back-to-backthree pointers the cut the deficit to 38-31 with 16:02 remaining inthe game.
Co-Lin responded with a 17-3 run over the new few minutes to goahead over Delta 55-34 with 13:11 remaining in the game for itslargest lead in the second half.
“We did a good job on defense,” added Young. “They playedhard.”
Co-Lin turned the ball over 27 times and Young wasn’t pleasedwith that aspect of the game.
“We have to play smarter,” Young added. “We turned the ball overa bunch. We have to do a better job.”
Victoria Richardson and Ayme Beeson followed in scoring witheight points apiece. Beeson made five steals and had seven assistswhile Richardson grabbed seven rebounds. Lauren Williams collectedsix rebounds followed by Nikki Blakely with five.
Delta got 20 points, seven rebounds and five steals from Reed.Shakeeta Boyd netted 14 points followed by Kiona Williams with 10points and three blocked shots. Pulling down eight rebounds wasLawanda Stewart.
