Smith’s 30 leads C-L women; Gulf Coast stops Co-Lin men

PERKINSTON – Sophomore center Shaquita Smith enjoyed a careergame Monday night, scoring 30 points, grabbing 14 rebounds andleading the unbeaten and No. 7-ranked Copiah-Lincoln CommunityCollege Lady Wolves to a 98-74 trouncing of Mississippi Gulf Coast.Smith made 15 of 23 field goal attempts as the Lady Wolves raisedtheir record to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in the South Division.

In the men’s game, Gulf Coast defeated Co-Lin 60-51, powered byOrlando Lewis with a game-high 21 points.

Co-Lin resumes play next Tuesday, Dec. 17, hosting Delgado ofNew Orleans. The women’s game starts the doubleheader at 6 p.m.

The Lady Wolves (11-0) took a 49-40 halftimelead over Gulf Coast. Smith, a 5-11 sophomore from Union Church,ran the floor well and got 20 of her points off assists from guardAyme Beeson who contributed a career-best 16 assists to thetriumph.

“We pressed the ball and ran our fastbreak well,” said Co-Linhead coach Gwyn Young. “Our defense and rebounding were fair in thefirst half. We did a better job on defense and our reboundingimproved in the second half.

“We had another great effort from out bench,” Young pointedout.

Co-Lin guard Tiania Burns scored 16 of her 22 points in thefirst half. She also had 5 assists and 4 steals. VictoriaRichardson accounted for 5 rebound and Beeson had 4 steals.

Gulf Coast got 17 points from JoAnna Williams. Myeisha Mingoadded 15 points and Margie Cowans 14.

The Wolves (4-6, 0-2) struggled offensivelyagainst Gulf Coast. Jerimie Collier scored 15 pints and Jason Scott11 for Co-Lin.

“We only had four assists as a team,” said Co-Lin men’s coachDennis Sims. “That shows that we are either dribbling too much andnot making shots.

“Defensively, we were good enough but shooting 40 percent fromthe floor and 50 percent from the (free throw) line won’t get thejob done. We are not shooting the ball very well.”

On the backboards, Carl Minor led Co-Lin with 7 rebounds. Scottand Collier each had 6 rebounds. Elliott Cowart made 2 assists andCollier collected 2 steals.

The Bulldogs, leading 27-23 at halftime, were supported by DavyEasterling with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Redd Morgan made 6assists.
