Lady ‘Cats ambush BHS; Panthers rout BC 99-32

BOGUE CHITTO – Senior guards Jessica Melton and Randi Moakprovided the 1-2 punch Monday night. They directed Bogue Chitto’sLady ‘Cats to a 52-45 knockout of Brookhaven in R.L. “Bob” CalhounGymnasium. Melton pumped in 16 points and Moak 14.
In the varsity boys game, Brookhaven’s Panthers romped to a99-32 triumph over the winless Bobcats. The Panthers were poweredby senior guard Brandon Caston with 16 points and forward MaurioFlintroy with 14.
Brookhaven resumes action Friday at Ridgeland. The JV boys beginplay at 5 p.m.
Bogue Chitto hosts the Bank of Brookhaven Lincoln CountyTournament which starts Friday in Calhoun Gymnasium. Bogue Chittoplays Enterprise in the opening round, girls at 7 and boys at8:30.
The Lady ‘Cats (7-1) outhustled the tallerBrookhaven squad. They led 26-22 at halftime and 38-29 entering thefourth quarter.
Brookhaven, coached by Billy Holmes, staged a strongfourth-quarter rally but BC was able to withstand the challenge,despite missing a bundle of free throws. The Lady ‘Cats made 11 of26 from the charity line.
On the backboards, Melton led the way with 9 rebounds. Moak had7 rebounds and Yolanda Drummond 6.
Bogue Chitto coach Mickey Myers said he was pleased with histeam’s triumph over Brookhaven. “Any time you defeat a quality 4Ateam like Brookhaven, you get some degree of satisfaction. Westruggled at the free throw line but we played welldefensively.”
Offensively, Brookhaven was led by senior center Ayana Tillman’s13 points and 12 rebounds. Playmaker Aneidra Stanton had 12 pointsand 3 assists.
The Panthers (12-1) dominated the contest,roaring to a 33-5 first quarter lead and posting a 58-15 halftimebulge over the outmanned Bobcats.
“We probably had one of our better games intensity-wise,” saidBHS coach Ronald Hines. “Our speed was pretty good.”
Brookhaven’s Jasper Hall collected 3 dunks in the blowout.
Bogue Chitto got a team-high 7 points from Verico Lewis.
In the JV boys game, Brookhaven beat BogueChitto 54-21 last night, led by Michael Byrd with 12 points andMicah Tanner with 11.
