BA Cougars have too much firepower for Bowling Green

Bowling Green Academy head coach Pat King provided a rave reviewafter watching the Brookhaven Academy Cougars whip his Buccaneers67-35 Friday night in John R. Gray Gymnasium. King watched BAsenior guard Craig Smith sack 22 points as the Cougars produced animpressive shooting display.
“I played four years at Bowling Green and I’ve been coachingthree years,” said King. “That’s the best shooting team from theoutside that I’ve ever seen.”
The Cougars (10-0), ranked No. 1 in a Jackson newspaper poll ofMississippi Private School Association teams, sacked 10 treysFriday night. Smith had 4 treys. Jonathan Winborne with 13 pointsand Cole Hodges with 9 points each had 3 field goals from beyondthe arc.
Senior center Alan Oster provided 14 points, including his firstdunk of the season. Alex Davis had 5 rebounds and Layne Moretondished out 7 assists.
Brookhaven Academy head coach Dale Watts said his team’sperformance was sporadic at best. “We looked very good in spots andvery bad in spots. We had several dry spells with no pointproduction.”
Asked about his team’s impressive perimeter shooting, Wattssaid, “We have four guys who can knock it down from outside.”
Bowling Green (2-4) got 19 points from 6-5 senior center CodyWise, including an early dunk. The Bucs fell behind 19-8 at thequarter and trailed 33-22 at halftime.
The Cougars went on a 19-5 scoring blitz in the third quarterand the Bucs never recovered.
“We didn’t play hard in the second half,” said Coach King. “Theykilled us in the third quarter.”
Craig Smith scored 10 of his points in the third frame, sackinga pair of treys. Cole Smith netted back-to-back field goals in thelast minute, pushing BA’s lead to 25 points, 52-27.
Junior High Results
A 19-point outburst by Jeremy Winborne carried the BA Cougars toa 65-35 victory in the junior high boys game. Zachary Watsonchipped in 9 points. Wesley Taylor netted 8 points and Alan Gray 7.Steve Covington scored 6 points, Bobby McGuffie 5 and JerrodRayborn 4.
Bowling Green got 8 points from Dustin Hall and RobbieCrain.
In a seventh grade game, Adams County ChristianSchool beat the Cougars 44-36. Dustin Carroll led the Rebels with12 points. Luke Brumfield had 9 points and Matt Barnes 8.
Thirteen points by Sawyer Wallace led Brookhaven in scoring.Paxton King chipped in 11.
