Loyd Star clips Collins

TAYLORSVILLE – Jody Britt worked the final six innings to helpthe Loyd Star Hornets to a 9-6 win over Collins in the TaylorvilleTournament Tuesday. The win improved Loyd Star’s record to 2-1.

Justin Whatley started for Loyd Star. Whatley allowed four runson two hits, struck out one batter and walked one.

Britt took over in the second inning and finished the game withthree hits and two runs allowed, three strikeouts and one walk.

“We have to do a little better job than this,” said Loyd Starhead baseball coach Sidney Wheatley of his pitchers. “We have tomake them (opponents) swing their bats. We settled down and did agood job.”

Loyd Star jumped out to a 3-2 lead but Collins came back to goahead 5-3 in the top of the third inning. The Hornets scored tworuns in the bottom of the third to tie it at 5-all. In the finalfour innings, Loyd Star outscored Collins 4-1 to bring home thewin.

Powering the Hornets at the plate with a double and a singleapiece were Jody Britt and Blake Wall. Tripling was MatthewDelaughter. Cody Cunningham doubled and Jared Britt singled.

“At the plate, we hit too many fly balls,” added Wheatley. “Werealize it wasn’t a great game. We have things we have tocorrect.”

Loyd Star will play in the Columbia Tournament Saturday at 1p.m. and 3.
