Hornets edge West Lincoln in finals of Lincoln County

The Loyd Star Hornets captured the Lincoln County TournamentSaturday at Enterprise Attendance Center. Loyd Star (7-2) came backto beat the West Lincoln Bears 9-8 in the final game of thetourney.
Earlier, the Hornets whipped the Bogue Chitto Bobcats 24-8 andthe Bears knocked off the host Yellow Jackets 7-4.
Loyd Star 9, West Lincoln 8
In the bottom of the seventh with the game tied 8-all, Loyd Starhad the bases loaded when David Cuevas came to the plate anddelivered a hard single to left field to score the game-winning runfor the Hornets.
“I was proud of the kids for getting the win,” said Loyd Starbaseball coach Sidney Wheatley. “We hit the ball well.”
Posting the win in relief was Jared Britt (3-0) with two runsallowed on two hits and one walk. Cody Cunningham worked the first4 1/3 innings with six strikeouts, four walks and four runs allowedon two hits.
Absorbing the loss was Daniel Allen (0-2) with nine runs allowedon 10 hits, nine strikeouts and four walks.
Powering the Hornets with four hits was Cuevas. Jody Brittdoubled three times. Cunningham doubled and singled. Hitting twosingles was Jared Britt.
The Bears (1-3) got a triple from Josh Rushing. Jeremy Branningdoubled and singled. Doubling were Casey Britt and PhillipJarancik. Landon Case and Allen hit safely.
“We seem to play Loyd Star real well,” said West Lincoln coachAndrew Redd. “We played good.”
Loyd Star 24, Bogue Chitto 8
In the first game for the Hornets, pitcher Lee Newell (1-0)nailed down the win with five strikeouts, six walks and six runsallowed on two hits. Tyler Williford worked the final two inningswith three strikeouts, one walk and two runs allowed on fourhits.
“We came out again hot with the bats,” said Wheatley. “We hitthe ball well. Several batters are hitting the ball well.”
Delaughter belted a home run, a triple and two singles for LoydStar. Jared Britt homered, tripled and doubled twice. Cunninghamsingled three times. Cuevas hit a triple, a double and a single.Newell doubled twice. Jody Britt ripped a double and a single.
West Lincoln 7, Enterprise 4
West Lincoln was led by Lofton’s double and a pair of singles.Case Britt singled three times. Tripling was Landon Case. WestonYoung doubled. Also hitting safely were Branning, Shane Lynch, RyanCase and Josh Rushing.
The winning pitcher was Landon Case (1-0) with 12 strikeouts andthree walks.
“Landon pitched a real good game,” said Coach Redd. “He workedhis way out of a bind.”
Loyd Star meets South Pike at 4 p.m. and McComb at 7 Tuesday inthe McComb Tournament.
West Lincoln hosts Crystal Springs Thursday for two games. Thejunior varsity game begins at 11 a.m. followed by the varsity at 1p.m. Friday, West Lincoln visits Crystal Springs with the same gametimes.
