Log spill closes road; cuts gas line

A loaded log truck overturned and ruptured a natural gas lineFriday morning on Highway 583 at the Hunters Road intersection,authorities said.
According to authorities, log truck driver David Chisholm, 25,of Brookhaven, was following a white car north on Highway 583around 7:30 a.m. Chisholm said the car, whose driver’s name wasunavailable, signaled for a left turn just before getting toHunters Road.
Chisholm tried to avoid the car by trying to go around on theright side. However, he clipped the vehicle, and the truckoverturned on its side, spilling its log load.
“There was nothing I could do…,” Chisholm said. “Eighteenwheelers can’t stop on a dime.”
Clifford Galey, Lincoln County Civil Defense director, said aMississippi River Gas line was hit during the accident. He said aresident near the intersection was not home and wind patterns didnot require any evacuations.
“Everything was fine. There was no reason to evacuate,” Galeysaid.
However, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department and MississippiHighway Patrol officials blocked off the highway while LincolnCounty crews worked on clearing the roadway of spilled logs.Traffic was being rerouted at Enterprise School in the north and atBogue Chitto Road south of the accident scene.
Authorities said there were no serious injuries in theaccident.
“I’m glad nobody was hurt,” said Chisholm, who had severalscrapes on his knuckles.
