Bogue Chitto’s Jessica Melton can do it all. The senior guard isrecognized for her overall basketball skills on offense anddefense.

Melton’s expertise has earned her the title of Miss Basketballon the DAILY LEADER’S All-Lincoln County Girls Team for the 2002-03campaign. The MVP also excels in softball and tennis.

Joining Melton on the DL’s Dream Team are Randi Moak of BogueChitto, Dana King of West Lincoln, Ava Brown of Loyd Star and AnnaGatlin of Brookhaven Academy. Input for the team was provided by DLsports department members and area coaches.

“It’s a big honor for me,” said Melton. “There are a lot of goodplayers in the county.”

As a senior, the 5-foot-7 Melton averaged 18.5 points, 6.4rebounds, 4.5 steals and 4.4 assists per game. A premier pointguard, she scored 1,813 points during her career.

An exceptional athlete, Melton has a 23-inch vertial leap.Standing 5-foot-7, she is recognized for her hustle and intensestyle of play. She has received recruiting attention from Memphis,Mississippi State, New Orleans, Mississippi College andCopiah-Lincoln Community College.

“Jessica plays with a passion for the game,” said Bogue Chittocoach Mickey Myers. “She is well respected by her peers. She is avery unselfish player. It doesn’t matter to her if she scores 10points or 30, as long as she wins.”

Melton makes 70.1 percent of her free throws. A top-notchdefender, Myers usually had her guard the other team’s bestplayer.

An honor role student, Melton’s favorite subject is chemistry.She is considering a career in either nursing or forensicmedicine.

Wearing jersey No. 13, Melton provided the Lady ‘Cats withplenty of leadership. They won the Division 7-1A Tournament titleand finished 22-3.

Randi Moak, a 5-7 guard, averaged 12 points,8.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.7 steals her senior season. TheLady ‘Cats dominated county opponents and defeated Class 4ABrookhaven.

An accurate perimeter shooter, Moak scored 1,371 points in hercareer. She made 68 percent of her free throws.

“Randi is a champion on and off the floor,” said Myers. “Thedriving force in Randi’s life is to please her heavenlyFather.”

A 4-sport standout, Moak has earned 19 letters at BogueChitto.

Bogue Chitto was 98-22 and won four division tournament titlesduring Melton and Moak’s four years on the varsity, making threestate tournament appearances.

Anna Gatlin, a 5-11 senior, averaged 11.8points and 10.1 rebounds this season, helping lead the Lady Cougarsto the Class AA State Tournament championship and a 38-2 worksheet.She also earned MVP honors in the MPSA Class A-AA All-StarGame.

“Anna has a great work ethic,” said Brookhaven Academy coachBarry Gray. “She is a model student-athlete. She’s probably thebest post defender I have coached in 10 years.”

Ava Brown, a 5-11 senior post for the LadyHornets, averaged 11.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals pergame. She helped lead Loyd Star to a 21-7 record and a runner-upfinish in the Division 6-2A Tournament, landing a berth in thestate playoffs.

Brown said she wants to play college basketball.

“Ava is greatly improved from last year,” said Loyd Star coachLori Britt. “She has become very consistent scoring around thegoal.”

Brown led Loyd Star at the charity line, making 59.8 percent ofher free throws.

Dana King, a 5-6 senior guard, was recognizedfor her long-distance shooting skills. She averaged 18 points, 3.4rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.2 steals per game. She made 99 treysthis season as the Lady Bears finished 17-7 and runners-up in theDivision 7-1A Tournament.

“Dana handles the ball well and she shoots the ball extremelywell,” said West Lincoln coach Lane Young. “She’s a realcompetitor.”

King was chosen Player of the Year on the DL’s 2002 All-LincolnCounty Slowpitch Softball Team. She, along with Melton and Moak,were All-County Basketball Team selections as juniors.
