Services for Gillis Edgar Beasley of Wesson are 11 a.m.,Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Providence United Methodist Churchwith burial in Providence Cemetery.

Visitation is today, from 5-9 p.m. at Stringer Funeral Home inHazlehurst.

Mr. Beasley, 75, died April 9, 2003 at Natchez RegionalHospital. He was a native and lifelong resident of CopiahCounty.

He was a cattle and catfish farmer. He was a member ofProvidence United Methodist Church.

Survivors are his wife, Aloise Beasley; his son, Ben Beasley ofStrong Hope; and his grandson, Tyler Beasley.

Frances Calhoun Lumsden

Services for Frances Calhoun Lumsden of Madison, formerly ofBrookhaven, were 2 p.m., Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Culley’sMeadowWood Funeral Home, Timberlane Road Chapel in Tallahassee,Fla., with burial in Culley’s MeadowWood Memorial Park.

Visitation was Thursday, from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lumsden, 84, died April 8, 2003 in Madison. She was born inMt. Olive on May 12, 1918, to Dr. and Mrs. Archie ShepherdCalhoun.

She was a graduate of Whitworth College with a B.S. degree fromthe Mississippi State College for Women. She earned her Master’sdegree in guidance from Mississippi College. She was a junior highscience teacher and an adult, high school and elementary schoolcounselor. She was a member of the Tallahassee Camellia Society andserved as a judge in camellia shows throughout the southeast. Shewas a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She and herhusband moved to Tallahassee in 1985.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, GeorgeRobert Lumsden.

Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, Robert S. and AnnLumsden; her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Fred Davis; hersister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Roy Black; her grandchildrenand their spouses, Robert S. Jr. and Jill Lumsden, Clay and IskraLumsden, Ginny Carroll, and J.C. Carroll; and her great-grandson,Zachary Robert Lumsden.

William Herbert “Jay” Smith

Services for William Herbert “Jay” Smith of Brookhaven are 3p.m., Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Living Word Faith Ministries withburial in Friendship Church Cemetery.

Visitation is Saturday, April 12, from 12-6 p.m. at WilliamsMortuary.

Mr. Smith, 64, died April 7, 2003 at King’s Daughters MedicalCenter. He was born in Lincoln County on Jan. 5, 1939, to WoodrowSmith and Roberta Daniels Smith.

He was retired from Paul Smith Trucking Company. He was a memberof Pilgrim Rest Methodist Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his sons, James Smithand Robin Smith; his sister, Alleen Smith; and his grandson,Lakendrick Smith.

Survivors are his sons, Gerald Smith of Kansas City, Kan., andDontray Williams of Brookhaven; his daughters, Shelia Nicks of HongKong, China, and Betty Jean Wilson and Annie Jean Wilson, both ofBrookhaven; his brothers, Bennie Smith of Slidell, La., James EarlSmith and Julius P. Smith, both of Hudson, N.Y., and Prentiss Smithof Chicago, Ill.; his sister, Evelyn Smith of Brookhaven; 11grandchildren and, many nieces and nephews.

Barbara Newton Taylor

Services for Barbara Newton Taylor of Brookhaven are 11 a.m.,Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Macedonia M.B. Church with burial inCarver Heights Cemetery.

Mrs. Taylor, 48, died April 8, 2003 at her residence. She wasborn in Brookhaven on June 9, 1954, to Robert Jones and AreaceJones, both of Brookhaven.

She was a housewife. She was a member of Macedonia M.B.Church.

Preceding her in death were her son, Dwight Dewayne Jones; andher sisters, Brigette Newton Williams and Roberta Newton Lee.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband,Moses Taylor of Brookhaven; her brothers, Robert E. Newton, SamuelA. Jones and James E. Jones, all of Brookhaven; her sisters,Dorothy Newton Hunter, Linda Newton Collins, Pamela Fields, LillianJones Bridges, Wydell Jones Dixon, all of Brookhaven, and VenetteNewton Vaughn of Rolling Fork.
