Special election will be needed for school board

A special election will be held in November to fill theremainder of the term of Lincoln County School Board member JerryCoon, who died earlier this week, school and election officialssaid.

“The school board will appoint someone, and then they’ll have aspecial election,” said Lincoln County Circuit Clerk Terry LynnWatkins.

Coon’s appointed successor has not been named. School boardmembers are expected to discuss the vacancy at Tuesday’s boardmeeting, school district officials said.

Watkins said the special election will coincide with the generalelection for statewide and county offices on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

The qualifying period for school board candidates will be Aug. 6through Sept. 5, Watkins said. Candidates will need petitions willsignatures of 50 registered voters from Educational District 1 -Enterprise.

The special election winner will fill the remainder of Coon’sunexpired six-year term, which goes through the end of 2007. Coon,64, died Tuesday and funeral services were held Thursday. He servedon the school board for 20 years and was president of the boardthis year.

School district officials said Vice-president Johnny Hart willpreside for the remainder of this year. Hart will then be presidentof the board for a full year next year.
