Co-Lin knocks off Pearl River in finale

POPLARVILLE – The Co-Lin Wolves bounced back from an openinggame loss to beat the nationally-ranked Pearl River CommunityCollege Wildcats 5-4 Wednesday in a South Division doubleheader.Freshman pitcher Tyler Perrett went the distance in the nightcapand claimed the victory, throwing a 7-hitter.

Pearl River (35-9, 10-6), ranked No. 2 in the nation at beingNo. 1 last week, defeated Co-Lin (15-27, 4-10) 4-1 in the opener,directed by Chad Catalano’s 5-hit pitching performance.

Co-Lin, coached by Keith Case, plays a twinbill at Gulf Coast inPerkinston Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. The Wolves wrap upregular-season play Wednesday, hosting Delgado (La.) for a 2 p.m.twinbill on Sullivan Field. The regional starts May 15, at ItawambaCommunity College in Fulton.

Co-Lin 5, Pearl River 4

Freshman second baseman Cayce Wallace tripled and singled in theCo-Lin victory. Outfielder Casey Ginn collected 2 singles. BrandonHubbard, Ben Goza, Jeffery Waycaster, Diego Nucete and AaronOberschmidt also hit safely.

In the second inning, Wallace smashed a 2-out triple to theright field corner. Waycaster’s infield dribbler scored Wallacewith Co-Lin’s first run.

In the third Ginn, led off with a walk, stole second base andscored on Nucete’s RBI single. In the fourth, Co-Lin plated 3 runs.Wallace led off with a single to center, Goza walked and Hubbardsingled to left. There was an error on the play and 2 runs scored.Oberschmidt followed with an RBI single to send Hubbard home fromthird.

Perrett, from Jackson, gave up 4 runs, 3 of them earned. Hefanned 7 batters and walked 1. He had 11 groundball outs in thegame.

“Tyler battled and pitched extremely well,” said Case. “PearlRiver had the tying run at second base but he struck out the lastbatter, Jeff Middleton, on a breaking ball.”

Pearl River got 2 hits from Matt Riser and Rhyne Hughes.

Neal Cannon (8-1) was the losing pitcher, absorbing his firstloss of the season. Cannon went 6 frames, allowing 9 hits and 5runs. He walked 2 and fanned 5. He 2-hit Co-Lin earlier in theseason.

Pearl River 4, Co-Lin 1

Kendall Poole (4-5) went 5 innings and absorbed the loss. Hegave up 3 runs on 4 hits, fanning 3 and walking 1.

Catalano gave up 1 earned, walked 3 and struck out 4.

Wallace had 2 hits in the opener. Paris Dancy, Aaron Guillot andOberschmidt singled.

The Wildcats got 2 hits from Justin Gros.
