Wolves knock off Bulldogs 4-3

FULTON – The Co-Lin Wolves held off the Holmes Bulldogs for a4-3 win Thursday in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 23Division II Baseball Tournament at Itawamba Community College.
The Wolves (20-26) meet Northwest (24-15) today at 4 p.m. in thesecond round.
In the top of the eight inning, Jeffrey Waycaster led off with adouble and advance to third base on a passed ball. Casey Ginn hit ahard single to the shortstop who made a throwing error and allowedWaycaster to score the fourth run for the 4-1 lead. Holmes addedtwo runs in the bottom of the ninth to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Wolves led the Bulldogs early 1-0 after two innings. Holmestied the game at 1-all in the bottom the third. Co-Lin went back ontop 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning.
Posting the win was freshman right hander Tyler Perrett (6-6).Perrett, a native of Hazlehurst, worked eight innings with 8strikeouts, 4 walks and 1 run allowed on 6 hits. Calin Cline workedfor 1/3 innings with 2 runs allowed on 3 hits. Getting the save in1/3 innings was Lance Deville.
“Tyler went 8 innings,” said Co-Lin head baseball coach KeithCase. “He did a good job of doing what we needed. He did atremendous job.”
Powering the Wolves with a triple and a single was sophomorecatcher Chase Coley. Ben Goza doubled. Hitting safely were AaronOberschmidt, Aaron Guillot and Cayce Wallace.
Sherman Calcote led Holmes (30-12) with a double and a single.Scott Norwood singled twice.
Case said Brookhaven native Kendall Poole would get the starttoday against Northwest.
The win gives the Wolves a chance to play through Saturday inthe double-elimination tourney.
“Northwest is going to be tough,” explained Case. “They are realaggressive at the plate.”
