American rally clips NL; Wesson eliminates Copiah

HAZLEHURST – Leftfielder Logan Cantrell launched a towering2-run homer to provide the margin of victory and pitcher ChandlerRogers struck out 14 batters in leading the Brookhaven AmericanLeague All-Stars to a thrilling 5-4 comeback win over theBrookhaven Nationals Tuesday night in the Dixie Youth Baseball AAANorth Subdistrict Six Tournament. The victory left the Americansunbeaten in the double-elimination tournament.

In the opener last night, Wesson outscored Copiah Country 13-10to remain alive in the tournament. Wesson plays the Nationalstonight in an elimination game, starting at 7 p.m. It will be arematch of an opening round game from last Saturday which saw theNationals rally for an 8-7 win.

The Americans play the winner Thursday night at 6. A secondgame, if necessary, would follow at 8 p.m.

Americans 5, Nationals 4

Cantrell’s dramatic 2-run homer came in the bottom of the fifthinning with Jake Shelby aboard. Rogers fanned 2 National Leaguebatters in the top of the sixth as the Nationals left the tying runon base.

The Nationals had erased a 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead in thetop of the fifth. They capitalized on 3 American errors. ScottiePeavey singled and Bubba Keene beat out an infield dribbler for ahit. Two fielding errors allowed 3 runs to score.

“We got a really outstanding pitching performance from ChandlerRogers,” said American League field manager Allen Kent. “Logan hita clutch homer for us. It was huge.”

In the first inning, Gabe Wilson doubled and Carl Tignerfollowed with an RBI double for the Americans. Rogers delivered anRBI ground out for a 2-0 lead American lead.

The Nationals only had 2 hits, both in the fifth. Peavey was thelosing pitcher.

Wesson 13, Copiah Co. 10

Wesson rallied from a 10-5 deficit with 8 runs in the sixthinning to take the comeback win and advance to tonight’s game withthe Nationals.

Gib Britt smashed a 2-run home run to lead Wesson at the plate.Multiple hitters included Matt Smith, Britt, Brandon Allen, MacLowery and Hunter Hood.

Hitting safely for Wesson were Alex Goza, Kyle Lowery, KyleCross, Patrick Boone and Jeremy Newman.

The pitching staff for Wesson’s win over Copiah included MattSmith, Tyson Wesley, Austin Hutson and Mac Lowery.
