Wesson all-stars advance in DYB Majors Subdistrict 6

The Copiah County All-Stars made a run in the top of the finalinning but came up short as the Wesson All-Stars held on for a 10-8win at Keystone Park Monday night in the second round of the DixieYouth Baseball Major League North Subdistrict Six Tournament.Copiah scored 7 runs in the top of the sixth.
Wesson faces the Brookhaven Nationals tonight at 6 p.m. as thedouble-elimination tournament continues. The Nationals beat CopiahSaturday night in the opening round.
“My boys needed the win,” said Wesson head baseball coach EricStrong following the game. “It has been a tough 2 weeks. We have agreat bunch of kids.”
Cody Burns pitched 5 1/2 innings for the win with 5 strikeouts,2 walks and 5 hits allowed. Reece Hanks was the losing pitcher with2 strikeouts, 2 walks and 5 hits allowed in the first 2 innings.Clayton Denson finished the remaining innings with 2 strikeouts, 1walks and 3 hits allowed.
Wesson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a 2-runhome run by Matt Smith.
Copiah’s Nick Lambert stole home plate in the top of the secondinning to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Wesson answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the second to pushits lead to 5-2. John Stephens scored the third run as teammatesTyler Strong and Brady Knight picked up the fourth and fifth runsoff Kody Crestman’s single.
In the bottom of the third, Wesson tacked on its sixth run,coming off a steal from third base by Caleb Broome.
Wesson tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to goahead 10-1. Langston Berry, Troy Smith and Josh Hood singled toload the bases with no outs. Broome belted a hard single down theleft sideline to score Berry for the seventh run. Sid Cawthern wasthrown out at first as Troy Smith scored the eighth run from thirdbase. Hood scored run No. 9 and Broom the 10th run on a BerryGivens sacrifice single.
Copiah battled back for seven runs in the top of the sixthinning.
Hitting for Copiah with a double apiece were Clayton Denson andChristopher Bagley. Hitting safely were Brian Jones, Todd Pits andMichael Williams.
For Wesson, Matt Smith singled twice.
AL Falls In AAA
At Summit Monday night, the DYB Brookhaven American LeagueAll-Stars lost 19-4 to the Natchez Rebels in a 2 and 1/2-hourmarathon. The Americans play McComb tonight at 6:30 in anelimination game of the District Six Tournament. McComb eliminatedSummit 6-5 last night.
Brandon Sanders was the winning pitcher as Natchez took a 4-0lead in the top of the first inning. Starting pitcher Anthony Durr,one of five Brookhaven pitchers, absorbed the loss.
