Local trio help South capture all-star tennis

JACKSON – A collection of all-stars combined skills to lead theSouth boys to a 6-3 victory over the North in the MississippiAssociation of Coaches All-Star Tennis Tournament, held Friday atParham Bridges Tennis Center. In girls action, the South battledthe North to a 3-3 deadlock because of rain and a lack of a fullroster.

The all-star format featured pro sets for the doublescompetition and they were played first. After the doubles, theNorth was ahead 2-1.

In boys doubles action, Stuart Misner of Brookhaven and PhillipJohnson of Quitman defeated Carr Chadwick of Oxford and MattWhiteside of Pontotoc 8-4.

Judson Langston and Lane Lofton of Brookhaven lost to BrandonHarris of Shannon and Scott Duncan of Tupelo 8-4.

In girls doubles, Sadie Corban of Brookhaven and Valerie Gibbsof Newton County lost to Kory Rogers of Tupelo and Carolyn Eley ofCleveland 8-4.

In boys singles action, Misner beat Harris 6-1, 6-0. Lofton beatWhiteside 6-1, 6-0 and Langston defeated Christian Albarracin ofCorinth 6-2, 6-4.

In girls singles, Rogers defeated Corban 6-3, 6-2.

“Our three Brookhaven boys won all three singles and reallypowered the South to help them win,” said BHS coach David Misner.”Sadie Cobran lost both matches but she did okay. She hadn’t playeda singles match in months. She has really improved a lot.”

Corban had teamed with Elliott Warren of Brookhaven to reach thechampionship finals of mixed doubles in the Class 4A StateTournament which took place in May. Corban has signed a scholarshipwith Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

Coaches of the 2003 Class 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A statechampionship tennis teams were presented with plaques prior to thestart of the tournament. Misner was in that group of awardwinners.

“They enjoyed getting to know the other players,” said CoachMisner of the Brookhaven quartet.

The all-stars assisted with an MAC coaching clinic on Thursdayat River Hills Racquet Club.
