Two Jayess women were killed in separate accidents on LincolnCounty roads Thursday, said Coroner-Medical Examiner ClayMcMorris.

Rebecca Mason, 56, and Susan Vaughn, 42, were killed Thursdayafternoon.

Mason’s accident on China Grove Road involved three vehicles andfour other people, but there were no other serious injuries.

Vaughn’s was a one-vehicle accident on Glenwood Trail. Her4-year-old son was a passenger, but was not seriously injured.

“There were two tragic accidents within one day,” McMorrissaid.

The first accident occurred around 2:36 p.m. on China Grove Roadat the Lincoln-Lawrence County line. Mason was killed when she lostcontrol of her 2002 Toyota sedan and was broadsided by oncomingtraffic, according to McMorris.

“What appears to have occurred is that it rained a little andwhen she was coming around the curve traveling north, the vehiclestarted sliding, causing her to bump the first vehicle, travelingsouth,” McMorris said.

The bump with 23-year-old Jayess resident Roland Fuller’s Dodgespun Mason and she was broadsided by Christopher Matheny, 22, ofBassfield. Matheny, in a 1998 Chevrolet, was traveling south behindFuller, McMorris said. Both drivers were unhurt.

Mason’s son, whose name was unavailable, was riding with her buthe was not seriously injured. He was transferred to King’sDaughters Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

The Brookhaven Fire Department was called to use the Jaws ofLife to extract Mason. Mason was pronounced dead at the scene byMcMorris.

Hartman-Hughes Funeral Home in Tylertown is handling thearrangements.

Vaughn was killed around 5:40 p.m. when she lost control of her2000 Kia Sportage while traveling northeast on Glenwood Trail,McMorris said.

The vehicle strayed off the right side of the road and spun,according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department report by Lt.Matt Springfield.

Her vehicle was sent sideways across the roadway, where shestruck the bank of a ditch on the left side of the road and beganflipping. She was ejected from the vehicle, the report said.

Vaughn’s 4-year-old son, who was not identified in the report,was transferred to KDMC for treatment and was later released,McMorris said. Vaughn was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It’s unfortunate,” said Sheriff Lynn Boyte. “Normally you wouldassociate this type of an accident with wet roads or rain, but thatwasn’t a factor here.”

Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Both accidents are still under investigation.
