Dr. Gene White

A memorial service for Dr. Gene White of Marietta, Ga., will beheld at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, at First Presbyterian Church ofMarietta.

Dr. White, 55, died Aug. 22, 2003, in Marietta, Ga.

He was a high school English teacher in Mississippi and Georgiafor more than 30 years. After graduating from Co-Lin High School in1965, he earned his undergraduate degree in English education fromDelta State University, and his Master of Education degree from theUniversity of Mississippi. He began his career at Yazoo City HighSchool in 1969, and left after 13 years to complete his doctorateat Auburn University. In 1985, he went to work at Feldwood HighSchool in College Park, Ga., and in August 1988, he joined MariettaHigh School in Georgia. In 1991, he was named the high school andMarietta City Schools Teacher of the Year, and runner-up forGeorgia’s Teacher of the Year.

In 1995, thanks largely to Dr. White’s efforts, MHS became thefirst traditional high school in Georgia authorized to offer theprestigious International Baccalaureate program.

Survivors include his sister, Barbara Prine of Starkville.

Memorials may be made to United Nations Association’s “Adopt aMinefield” program, with contributions sent to Michalynn Hornbeck,c/o Marietta High School, 1171 Whitlock Ave., Marietta, GA30064.

Dr. White’s body was donated to Emory University School ofMedicine.
