Henning-Russ claim Tucker title

Paul Henning and Chandler Russ rose to the occasion Monday andcaptured the Seventh Annual Tucker Smith Memorial Labor Day WeekendTournament at the Brookhaven Country Club. The Brookhaven duo wonthe Championship Flight by defeating Trey Holder and Drew Delaneyin the 4-ball finals 4-3.

“We were real pleased to win it,” said Russ. “We had a good timeand it was for a good cause. Paul and I played well in all threematches.”

On Saturday, Russ-Henning beat Jay O’Hern and Bill Glasgow 4-3.On Sunday, they defeated George Hennington and Jeff Henning2-1.

In the finals, Paul Henning rolled in a birdie putt on the par-48th hole to put his team 2 holes up. The pin was tightly tucked inthe back corner.

Russ birdied the 13th and 14th holes to give his team a 3-upadvantage. On the par-5, 502-yard 14th, he hit driver and 5-wood togive himself a chance at an eagle putt from 20-feet.

The match was determined on the next hole. Henning birdied the15th hole, a tough par-3. His 173-yard tee shot, a 5-iron into astiff wind, came within 13 feet and he rolled in the decisiveputt.

“Chandler is unbelievable in the way he putts,” said Henning.”He is a great player.”

It was the fourth time for Henning to be part of thechampionship team. On three previous occasions, he had teamed withDon Coleman to win the title.

Holder-Delaney had eliminated defending champions Don Colemanand Henry Swann in Sunday’s second round. Coleman-Swann hadadvanced with a Saturday win over Ronny Ross and Bill Pullen.

Tournament director Jeff Henning said the tournament attractedits largest field, 76 teams. “This was probably our best field andthe most competitive. We raised around $5,000 for the LincolnCounty Habitat for Humanity.”

Mike Smith, the father of Tucker Smith who was killed in anautomobile accident, said he wanted to thank all of the sponsorswho made the 3-day tournament a success. “We especially want tothank State Bank for being our major sponsor. We also want torecognize Cracker Barrel Barbecue for providing lunch for theseventh straight year.”

In the Championship Flight’s consolation bracket, Ronny Ross andBill Pullen defeated Jay O’Hern and Bill Glasgow in the finals.

First Flight honors went to John Ratcliff and Todd Nelson. TheSecond Flight was won by Cameron Smith and Fred Zachary. ThirdFlight laurels went to Brian Norris and Greg Demron.

Fourth Flight honors went to Owen Carty and Ray Montalvo.Winning the Fifth Flight were Kurt Abbey and Danny Riebock. TheSixth Flight went to Jody Jordan and Fred Cannon.

The Seventh Flight was won by Braxter Irby and Joe BuddyAnderson. Eighth Flight honors went to Clint Rounsaville and TyHardin. The Ninth Flight was won by Shane Williamson and ScottAndrews.
