The Wesson Cobras made their second Lincoln County stop asuccessful one by handing the home-standing West Lincoln Bearstheir second loss of the season 34-12 Friday night on Perry MillerField.

The Cobras used a one-two punch of fullback Ladelle Jackson andtailback Brian Channell to dominate the ground game and theirpatented, stingy defense to extinguish the Bears’ offensivehopes.

“We played well tonight,” stated Wesson head coach Ronald Greer.”Those two ran the ball well. I am pleased.” Jackson and Channellcombined for 201 yards and 4 touchdowns, with Channell scoring 3times.

The game began in an awful fashion for the Bears as Jacksonintercepted Bears quarterback Landon Case only 24 seconds into thegame and returned it 19 yards to the Cobra 4 yard line. The nextplay from scrimmage, Channell would cash in for the Cobras from 4yards out to give them a 6-0 lead at the 11:30 mark of the 1stquarter.

The Bears, whose offense was in hibernation the first threequarters, were forced to punt on their second possession and theCobras took advantage once again. The Cobras chose to throw ontheir next possession as quarterback Nick Gunter hit wideout CoreyGemelli with a 19-yard pass on a beautiful catch as the Cobras led13-0. Gunter nailed the point after and the Cobras led 14-0.

The rest of the first half was a defensive battle between thetwo teams as each took turns handing a setback to the other. TheWest Lincoln Bears were on the receiving end of a Gunter throw whensafety Daniel Lofton picked it off to end a Cobra drive in theirown territory and a fumble recovery in the 2nd quarter.

The only scoring of the 2nd quarter was a Channell 24-yardscamper at the 4:15 mark to give the Cobras a 20-0 lead. The PATsnap was botched and the conversion failed. The Cobras led at thehalf 20-0.

The Cobras began the second half by receiving the ball andchewing up clock, with Channell taking another to the endzone on a3-yard TD run at the 6:58 mark of the third quarter. Gunter nailedthe PAT and the Cobras led 27-0.

The scoring continued once again for the Cobras 4 minutes laterat the 2:22 mark as Jackson hit paydirt from 3 yards out toconclude the night for the Cobra first teamers. Gunter kicked his4th PAT and the Cobras led 34-0.

The 4th quarter belonged to the Bears quarterback Case andfullback Allen Skates as each churned out big yardage in theperiod. The Bears scored on runs of 2 and 20 yards by Case to landthe Bears their 12 point total. The two conversion tries failed andthe scoring ended with Wesson on top 34-12.

“I thought we played a lot better,” stated Bears new head coachRonald DuPree. “We tackled a lot better and we hope to get bettereach week.”

The building blocks for the West Lincoln program can be seen inplace as the Bears never quit and played hard for 48 minutes.

The Cobras were led on offense by Channell who rushed 11 timesfor 100 yards and 3 scores. “Last week was my first start and Iscored once. Three times feels pretty good,” commented a happyChannell.

Jackson topped Channell by 1 yard with 101 yards on 13 carriesand a score. Gunter was 3 of 4 passing for 37 yards with Gemellicatching 2 balls for 26 yards and a touchdown.
