Unbeaten Hornets host 4-0 Bassfield

Some team is in for a loss Friday night when the Loyd StarHornets host the Bassfield Yellow Jackets at William E. “Sambo”Smith Field in a battle of undefeated (4-0) Class 2A squads. LoydStar is out of Region 6 and Bassfield out of Region 7. Game time is7:30 p.m.

Games involving Region 6-2A team last Friday featured Loyd Starwhipping Lake Providence, La., 38-8, Class 3A Franklin Countystopping Wesson 26-7, Heidelberg dumping Hinds AHS 30-19, Class 3ARaymond nipping St. Andrew’s 22-20, Bassfield shutting out McLaurin34-0 and Madison St. Joseph falling to Lake 54-6.

Area football action features Brookhaven at Jim Hill, North Pikeat Franklin County, Lawrence County at South Pike, Amite County atHazlehurst, Wingfield at McComb and Raleigh at Crystal Springs.

Loyd Star head coach Sidney Wheatley has studied Bassfield andexpects a tough game Friday night.

“They have got team speed,” said Wheatley. “Defensively, theyare strong. They are 4-0 on the season. They will be a real testfor us.”

In the win at Lake Providence, La., last Friday, Loyd Starcollected 15 first downs and 287 offensive yards. Powering therunning game with 13 carries for 78 yards was Matthew Delaughter.Following were Josh Townsend with 11 rushes for 90 yards. JuronCollins with 3 carries for 70 yards and Kyle Wooley followed with 5rushes for 27 yards.

Defensively, Michael Britt led the Hornets with 8 tackles. BarryRoberts finished with 6 stops.

Last year, Loyd Star knocked off Bassfield 17-6. Coached byAllen Dyess, the Jackets were 1-9 in his first year at thehelm.

Wesson (2-2) has suffered back-to-back losses to Richland andFranklin County since going 2-0 early in the season.

The Cobras return to Stone Stadium on the Co-Lin campus Fridaynight to host the Region 6-4A Terry Bulldogs for homecoming. TheBulldogs are also 2-2 on the season.

“They (Terry) have a real good looking football team,” saidWesson head coach Ronald Greer. “They are big up front on offense.They have some of the hardest running backs I’ve seen in a while.They get to the football real well on defense.

“We have to continue to get better,” added Greer. “I was pleasedwe tackled better. We just have to keep working.”

Terry is coming off a 44-20 beating at the hands of Jackson JimHill.

In the loss at Franklin County, Wesson quarterback Nick Gunterand running back Ladelle Jackson led with 8 rushes for 33 yardsapiece.

Defensivley, Phillip Freeman paced the Cobras with 7tackles.

Lawrence County (4-0, 1-0) faces its toughest test of the Region6-4A campaign Friday when the Cougars visit the unbeaten South PikeEagles (4-0). Coach Trent Hammond’s Monticello-based Cougars,ranked No. 15 in the AP Top 25 Prep Poll, thumped tough divisionfoe McComb 41-21 last Friday.

The Magnolia-based Eagles, under first-year head coach RandallHuffman, squashed Class 5A Vicksburg 49-20 last Friday. South Pikeis ranked No. 7 in this week’s AP poll.

In the win over Vicksburg, South Pike recorded 402 yards ontotal offense. The Eagles rushed for 297 yards on the ground.
