Co-Lin Wolves tour East Central

WESSON — East Central Community College fullback Germaine Smithand tailback Kenshay Hunter are the two main rushers in theWarriors’ powerful rushing attack. Co-Lin’s Wolves hope to lock thedoor or at least slow them down Saturday afternoon in Decatur.Kickoff for the South Division clash is 2:30 p.m.

East Central (0-2, 1-3) and Co-Lin (1-1, 2-2) are both comingoff South Division setbacks. The Warriors lost to Gulf Coast 33-17while Co-Lin was falling to Jones County 36-7 last Saturday.

In other South Division action Saturday, unbeaten Jones County(1-0, 4-0) is at Southwest(0-1, 2-2) for homecoming, Gulf Coast(1-1, 2-2) is at Hinds (2-0, 3-1) and Pearl River (1-1, 3-1) playsa non-division game at Itawamba (1-1, 1-3).

According to Co-Lin defensive coordinator Paul Purvis, EastCentral’s offense has size, speed and strength. “”East Central runsthe ball very well,” said Purvis. “They have an outstandingoffensive line and some strong running backs. They are fifth in theleague in rushing.”

Smith (5-9, 225, so.) from Newton County, has rushed for 264yards. Hunter (5-10, 180, fr.), from Philadelphia, has gained 202yards this season. East Central averages 203.5 rushing yards pergame.

Quarterbacking the Warriors is Terrell Robinson (6-2, 190, fr.),a newcomer from Palatka, Fla. Robinson has passed for 466 yardsthis season. He hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass but has beenintercepted 4 times.

The Warriors are under the direction of sixth year head coachTerry Underwood, a Delta State graduate. He was 3-6 last season.Underwood’s overall record is 27-29.

Co-Lin was leading the league in total defense but Jones Countyinflated their offensive stats at the expense of Co-Lin. The Wolvesallow an average of 172 yards offense per game.

Jones jumped on Co-Lin for 120 yards offense in the firstquarter but Purvis made the right adjustments.

“We changed some technique at the end of the first quarter andmade some adjustments. Then we only allowed 100 yards for the nextthree quarters. Jones had no yards in the third quarter.”

“Our guys want to get that No. 1 spot back on defense.”

Co-Lin is led by sophomore linebacker Tim Dobbins of Mendenhallwho has 25 solo tackles and 17 assists in 4 games. Defensive backDamien Gary of Hazlehurst has accounted for 20 solo stops and 8assists. End Dusty Shack has 4 quarterback sacks to his credit. RodConner has 3 interceptions.

While Purvis and his Wolves wrestle with the defense, headfootball coach David Poinsett is trying to regroup the offense. TheWolves only scored one TD against Jones and it came on a 37-yardhalfback pass from Johnathan Zacharie to wide receiver JohnathanMcLaurin. Thomas Garland’s PAT made it 30-7 just beforehalftime.

In 4 games, Co-Lin freshman quarterback Johnathan Little hascompleted 23 of 57 passes for 236 yards and 2 touchdowns. He has 4interceptions.

As a team, Co-Lin ranks last in total offense, averaging 198.2yards per game. McLaurin ranks four in punt returns, averaging 13.3yards per return.

Wolf Tails: Last year Co-Lin edged East Central34-31 for a homecoming victory in Stone Stadium.
