Man charged in stabbing

A Brookhaven man is facing aggravated assault charges inconnection with the stabbing of a Brignal man early Mondaymorning.
Varnell Fields, 28, of 2440 Morgan St., has been charged withtwo counts of aggravated assault in the stabbing of Cedric Melton,age unknown, of 2377 Dandelion Ln., according to Sheriff LynnBoyte.
Melton was taken by ambulance to King’s Daughters Medical Centerfor emergency surgery. He was listed in fair condition today,hospital officials said.
Deputies responded to Melton’s home after receiving a 911 callshortly after midnight, Boyte said. Fields, Melton and two womenwere at the scene.
Fields and Melton apparently argued about the length of time ittook for a trip Melton had taken with the two women to get morealcohol, Boyte said. When Melton and the women returned, Fields wasdrunk and upset and confronted Melton, the sheriff said.
During the altercation, Melton was stabbed once in the stomachwith a knife, the sheriff said.
“I’m not sure from the report where the second charge stemsfrom,” Boyte said. “I’ll have to consult with the deputy. It’s notclear from the report.”
Bond has not been set for Fields.
