Russian Roulette suspected in shooting

Brookhaven police are continuing their investigation into analleged Tuesday afternoon self-inflicted shooting of a Monticelloman who died Wednesday at a Jackson hospital.

Brookhaven Police Chief Pap Henderson said the incident wasreported at 2:24 p.m. Tuesday at the 104 Woodland Hills Dr. home ofAngela Marie Smith, 18. Henderson said officers responded to thereported suicide shooting and found Joseph Wayne Smith, 20, of 0397New Zion Road, Monticello, lying on the bedroom floor with agunshot wound to the right side of his head.

“He was still alive and officers called an ambulance,” Hendersonsaid.

Joseph Smith, Angela Smith’s half brother, was taken to King’sDaughters Medical Center and then transferred to the UniversityMedical Center is Jackson. He died Wednesday at 6:55 p.m., saidPolice Det. Roger Wilson.

Citing the sister’s initial statement to police, Henderson saidJoseph Smith retrieved a gun from the bedroom nightstand, removedall but one bullet and asked the girl if she wanted to play”chicken.” The sister said no, but Joseph Smith continued with the”Russian Roulette” activity.

“This investigation is still on-going,” Henderson said.

The chief said gun powder residue tests were done on both thevictim’s and sister’s hands. That evidence was being taken to thestate Crime Lab today.

Henderson said foul play was not suspected and no arrests havebeen made. He said police planned to contact Angela Smith Thursdayto get a written statement from her.

“We’re not saying she’s a suspect,” Henderson said. “We’ve gotto continue to investigate until we’re satisfied with the evidenceand get results back from the Crime Lab.”

Henderson hoped to have test results from the Crime Lab in abouta week. He said authorities are treating the shooting asaccidental, but they have to “cover all the bases” with theirinvestigation.

“We’re treating it as such until the results from the Crime Labare returned to us,” Henderson said.
