CLARKSDALE — Forward Travalyn Smith pumped in 20 points andgrabbed 9 rebounds in leading the Co-Lin Lady Wolves to a 76-36Monday night rout of the Coahoma Community College Lady Tigers. Inthe men’s game, Coahoma beat Co-Lin 67-63, led by JuliusMcClellan’s 19 points and 5 steals.

Co-Lin resumes play Nov. 17-18, in the Northwest Tournament atSenatobia.

The Lady Wolves (1-1) rebounded from aseason-opening overtime loss to Holmes, placing four players indouble figures. Following Smith, a 5-10 freshman from JeffersonCounty, were Renee Fields and Lauren Williams with 12 points apieceand Ayana Tillman with 10.

“It was good to get a win on the road and everyone got someplaying time to see what they could do,” said Co-Lin women’s coachGwyn Young. “We need to continue improving on defense and we mustdo a better job with our offense. We don’t have a good feel for ouroffensive execution at this time.”

Co-Lin took a 23-6 halftime lead over a cold-shooting Coahomasquad. The Lady Wolves lit up the scoreboard for 53 second-halfpoints. They finished with 17 steals.

On the backboards, Smith led Co-Lin with 9 rebounds. Williamshad 7 boards and Crystal Brown 6. Demetrice Jackson dished out 6assists.

The Wolves (1-1) got 14 points from sophomore forwardJeremy Richardson and 13 from freshman guard Ladell Eackles. Co-Linshot a dismal 36 percent from the field.

“At times we were unable to execute offensively and whenwe did, we didn’t shoot the ball well,” said Co-Lin men’s coachDennis Sims. “We gave up 20 offensive rebounds and allowed Coahomato penetrate.

“Our players must understand that we must be preparedmentally as well as physically for each game,” Sims pointed out.”Winning on the road is difficult.”

The Wolves led 29-26 at halftime but were outrebounded39-27 and committed 21 turnovers. Dartez Edwards made 3assists.

Coahoma (2-3) got 13 points and 9 rebounds from ByronCarter. Cedric Thomas had 11 points and Doug Owens 10.
