Lady Wolves whip Holmes

SUMMIT — Realizing a measure of revenge, the Co-Lin Lady Wolveswhipped the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs 71-53 Monday inthe opening round of the Southwest Tournament. They were powered byfreshman Crystal Brown’s 18 points and 8 rebounds.

The Co-Lin men played Holmes and lost 77-71 to the Bulldogs inovertime. Co-Lin plays Delgado Community College of New Orleanstoday, women at 2 and men at 4 p.m., in the second round of thetournament. Southwest plays Holmes tonight at 6 and 8 p.m.

The Lady Wolves (3-3) avenged a season-opening,60-55 overtime loss to Holmes at Wesson. Brown, a 5-11 freshmanfrom Natchez, sacked 9 of 12 field goal attempts in yesterday’svictory.

“Our defense was very good and we did a good job of attackingHolmes’ zone defense,” said Co-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young.”Aiesha Collins gave us some outside scoring and Crystal Brown hadher best game of the year.”

Young saw Holmes reduce his team’s 20-point lead to 12 points inthe second half, fueled by a full-court press and half-court trap.”Holmes was trapping hard and we didn’t handle the ball wellenough. Hopefully, we can work on our mistakes and continue toimprove.”

Brown was supported by freshman guard Jessica Melton’s 12 pointsand 5 steals. Travalyn Smith and Renee Fields chipped in 10 pointseach.

Holmes got 18 points Mahogany Wilson and 16 from IdaEdwards.

The Wolves committed 28 turnovers as Holmescame from behind to avenge a season-opening setback at Wesson. Alast-second trey by Kory Moore sent the game into overtime.

“At times we played as well as we have all year,” said Co-Linmen’s coach Dennis Sims. “We were never in the game duringovertime.”

Freshman guard Ledell Eckles led Co-Lin with 19 points. JeremyRichardson chipped in 12 points.

Holmes got 19 points from Terrance Atkins.
