Loyd Star overpowers Enterprise

Loyd Star senior guard Jared Britt pumped in a game-high 22points Friday night to lead the host Hornets to a 66-40 win overthe Enterprise Yellow Jackets in Lincoln County basketball action.Britt also pulled down 11 rebounds, made five steals and had fourassists.

In the girls game, junior forward Shara Johnson fired in 19points to direct the Lady Hornets to a 50-38 victory over the LadyJackets. Johnson also collected nine rebounds, two steals and twoassists.

Loyd Star meets Enterprise again Thursday in the first night ofthe Lincoln County Round Robin Tournament at West Lincoln’s JackCase Gymnasium. Loyd Star faces Enterprise at 4 p.m. and 5:30followed by Bogue Chitto meeting West Lincoln at 7 and 8:30.

The Hornets (6-0) went up on winless Enterprise(0-6) quickly for a 20-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Athalftime, the Hornets enjoyed a 38-17 advantage over theJackets.

“We made them (Jackets) turn the ball over a lot,” said LoydStar boys coach Gene “Moochie” Britt after the win. “We had a lotof steals and pressure. We played good in the first and secondquarters.”

Both teams played subs in the second half. Loyd Star outscoredEnterprise 17-8 in the third quarter. The Jackets went on a 15-11run on the Hornets in the final frame.

“Coach Britt has a fantastic group,” said first-year Enterpriseboys coach Ricky Gray. “They’ll be a title contender.”

Adding support to the Loyd Star win with 19 points and fivesteals was Tyler Williford. Jonathan Smith grabbed eight rebounds.Rufus Humphries collected seven rebounds.

For Enterprise, Corey Everett led with 10 points. Corey Smithand Leighton Tate followed with eight points apiece.

“The kids have done all I have asked of them,” added Gray.”They’re doing better.”

Britt was pleased with the team play of his Hornets.

“This group plays as good as a team as any I have coached sinceI’ve been here,” explained Britt. “They play good together. Theygive 100 percent.”

In the girls game, Loyd Star (5-1) held a slim9-6 lead over Enterprise in the first quarter. A 13-8 run gave theLady Hornets a 22-13 lead over the Lady Jackets at halftime. In aclose second half, Loyd Star outscored Enterprise 28-27 to preservethe win.

“We tried to hold down our turnovers tonight,” stated Loyd Stargirls coach Lori Britt. “We did better tonight.”

Junior point guard Jordan Britt netted 11 points and had threeassists. Britt was 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Sarah Loftonmade five steals.

“Loyd Star does a good job,” said Enterprise girls coach BillyVaughn. “We playing in spurts. We need to do a better job.”

Leading Enterprise with 11 points, 11 rebounds and three blockedshots was sophomore center/forward Alisha Mason. Scoring 10 pointsand grabbing eight rebounds was junior center Jana Brister. ErinJohnson collected six rebounds and had four assists.

In the boys contest, Loyd Star posted a 35-20 win overEnterprise. For the Hornets, Brooks Case had 11 points followed byRandy Fells with 10 points.

Matthew Possion scored eight points for Enterprise.

The Lady Hornets knocked off the Lady Jackets 29-18 in JV girlsplay. Hailey Ratcliff led Loyd Star with 8 points.

Friday, Loyd Star battles Bogue Chitto in the first two gamesand squares off against host West Lincoln in late action Saturday.
