Wesson, Loyd Star, N. Pike girls win

In the other first-round games, the Dexter Lady Bulldogs thumpedthe Bogue Chitto Lady Bobcats 59-49, the North Pike Lady Jaguarssquashed the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes 68-28 and the Loyd Star LadyHornets dumped the Enterprise Lady Yell ow Jackets 40-28.

North Pike is the defending girls champ.

In Monday’s games, the Enterprise girls meet St. Al at 10 a.m.and Bogue Chitto meets Cathedral at 1 p.m. in the loser’sbracket.

Wesson 37, Cathedral 27

Megan Allen and Anna Johnson directed the 3-9 Wesson girls withnine points apiece. Coach Jemmye Ann Helms’ Lady Cobras jumped outto a 13-4 lead in the first quarter and were on top 19-10 athalftime.

Danielle Smith had 14 points for Cathedral.

Dexter 59, Bogue Chitto 49

Meleah Brown’s 14 points powered Bogue Chitto in a losing cause.Marley Porter finished with 10 points. The Lady Bulldogs led theLady Bobcats 17-12 in the first quarter and 31-24 at the half.

Yshenkia Haynes led Dexter with 19 points. Sheena Marks netted13 points followed by Nikki Ratcliff with 12.

Loyd Star 40, Enterprise 28

In the fourth meeting between the two Lincoln County rivals,Loyd Star (8-4, 1-1) went on a 18-8 run in the second quarter totake a 25-14 lead over Enterprise at halftime. The Lady Jackets cutthe deficit to seven points, 29-22, going into the final frame.Loyd Star outscored Enterprise 11-6 to preserve the win.

Junior point guard Jordan Britt powered Loyd Star with agame-high 17 points, including 4 three-pointers. Britt also madethree steals and had three assists.

“We need to get more physical,” said Loyd Star girls coach LoriBritt after the win. “We have to improve on our free-throwshooting.” The Lady Hornets were 7 of 17 from the charity line.

Contributing to the Loyd Star win with 14 points and 13 reboundswas Shara Johnson. Hailey Ratcliff pulled down eight reboundsfollowed by Amanda Smith with six rebounds.

“We didn’t shoot the ball that well,” said Enterprise girlscoach Billy Vaughn.

The leading scorer for the Lady Jackets was Alisha Mason with 13points.

North Pike 68, St. Aloysius 28

North Pike had no trouble putting away the smaller St. Al LadyFlashes. Coach John P. Stephens’ Lady Jaguars pounced on the LadyFlashes for 17-5 first-quarter lead. At halftime, North Pike pushedits lead to 38-6 .

“We shot surprisingly well,” explained Stephens. “We came uphere with high hopes. We shot the ball much better than Ianticipated.”

Directing the 12-1 Lady Jags with 14 points was senior guardBritta Stephens, including 3 three-pointers. Teresa Leonard firedin 13 points. Phenicia Taylor followed with 12 points.

St. Al was led by Sarah Kerut’s 11 points.
