Winbornes direct BA boys triumph

The Winborne brothers, Jonathan and Jeremy, provided BrookhavenAcademy’s 1-2 offensive punch Monday night in John R. GrayGymnasium. They each scored 16 points in leading the Cougars to a72-45 trouncing of the Marvell (Ark.) Eagles in the opening roundof the BA Holiday Classic.

The Cougars (14-2) meet Simpson County tonight at 8:15 in thesemifinals. Simpson County drew an opening round bye when McCombParklane pulled out of the tournament.

In the other semifinals boys game, Delta Academy plays CentralPrivate at 5:45. Delta beat Copiah 45-36 and Central Privatesmashed Prentiss Christian School 69-28 in the other opening roundgames.

In a consolation game today, Marvell plays Copiah at 3:15.Consolation and championship finals are Saturday.

The Cougars got 15 points from center AlexDavis and 10 from guard Cole Hodges who added 6 rebounds and 3assists. Jonathan Winborne, a senior, dished out 6 assists.

“We are working on becoming more balanced on offense anddefense,” said BA head coach Dale Watts. His Cougars are defendingClass AA state champions but he lost most of his starters tograduation.

“We turned the ball over too much and Marvell outrebounded us21-20,” said Watts. “Marvell hit the boards pretty good. We onlyplayed well in spurts.”

The Eagles (6-5), coached by Mike Reans, got a game-high 19points and 8 rebounds from Darren Hardesty. He had 13 points athalftime.

The Cougars led 19-13 at the quarter and went ahead by 10points, 23-13, on back-to-back baskets by Hodges and Davis. Theyled 34-19 at halftime.

After a halftime sermon, the Cougars caught fire. They outscoredthe Eagles 27-10 in the third quarter. A putback by Hodges gave thehosts a 30-point bulge, 55-25, with 2:01 left.

Delta 45, Copiah 36

Ty Singuefield sacked 19 points and Brett Allred 10 in Delta’svictory over the Colonels. Lee Thompson chipped in 9 points.

Copiah got 17 points from Shelby Ford and 7 from DavidBrunt.

Central Private 69, PCS 28

Ten points apiece by Josh Wall and Brandon Billings led CentralPrivate over Prentiss Christian. Derek Woolfolk added 8 points.

The Saints got 8 points from Eric Fortenberry and 6 from SteveGriffith.
