BA teams claim Classic titles

Mallory Logan and Kelli Byrd scored 14 points each in leadingthe Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars to a 56-43 Saturday nightchampionship triumph over the Delta Academy girls in BA’s HolidayClassic. Lauren Smith chipped in 12 points and Jessie Altman 10 asthe Lady Cougars remained undefeated in 21 games.

In the boys championship, Brookhaven Academy whipped CentralPrivate 74-59 in John R. Gray Gymnasium as Jonathan Winborne sacked24 points and Jeremy Winborne 20.

In the consolation games, the Central Private girls whippedPrentiss Christian 42-18, the Copiah boys thumped PrentissChristian 71-45, the Simpson girls knocked off Copiah 57-48 and theDelta boys knocked off Simpson 61-53 in overtime.

The Lady Cougars (21-0) led Delta 28-27 athalftime. They were directed by Byrd’s 11 rebounds. Smith had 5rebounds 4 assists and 3 steals. Logan grabbed 6 rebounds, 6 stealsand made 3 assists.

“Both teams played well in the first half,” said BA girls coachBarry Gray. “Our half-court defense did better in the second halfand we made better shot selection inside.”

Delta got a game-high 26 points from Ole Miss signee LindsayRoy. Megan Green added 12 points.

The Cougars (16-2) roared to a 29-18 halftimelead. Center Alex Davis collected 14 points and 8 rebounds forBrookhaven. Jeremy Winborne had 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.Cole Hodges added 9 points and 5 assists. Seth Davis had 6rebounds. Jonathan Winborne added 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2steals.

“This is a great win,” said BA boys coach Dale Watts. “We didwhat we had to to to win the game.”

Central Private (14-2) got 19 points from Kurt Perkins and 16from Travis McGraw.

“Brookhaven Academy was in better condition than we were,” saidCP coach Jason Norris. “We missed some easy shots under the basketand we didn’t do a good job communicating on offense.”

Central Private 42, Prentiss 18

Sonni Kirkwood fired in 17 points and Samantha Kirkwood netted14 for the Central Private girls.

Prentiss Christian was led by Alyson Clark and Kimberly Speightswith six points apiece.

Copiah 71, Prentiss 45

In the boys game, David Brunt paced Copiah with 15 points.Shelby Ford and Will Ervin finished with 10 points apiece.

Eric Fortenberry directed Prentiss Christian with 18 points.Eleven points was scored by Zach Davis.

Simpson 57, Copiah 48

In the other girls game, Adrian Lee’s 18 points paced Simpson.Lindsey Paris and Kate Hubbard had 11 points apiece.

Copiah got 14 points from Lacy Williams. Kelly Pyles finishedwith 11 points.

Delta 61, Simpson 53 (OT)

The Delta boys got a game-high 30 points from Lee Thompson.Tyler Singuefield had 14 points, followed by David McNutt with11.

Justin Brett’s 17 points led Simpson. Neil Stephens pumped in 16points. Scoring 10 points each were Clayton Massey and DennisHogan.
