Lady Panthers sink Terry

TERRY — Terry guard Joe Willis pumped in a game-high 28 pointsto lead the Bulldogs to a 77-72 Division 6-4A win over theBrookhaven Panthers Friday night. In the varsity girls game, theBrookhaven Lady Panthers ran past the Terry Lady Bulldogs70-39.
Terry makes the return Division 6-4A trip to Brookhaven’sSinclair Gym, on Feb. 10.
Brookhaven beat Terry 28-26 in the preliminary JV boys game.
Brookhaven returns to Hinds County Tuesday night for a Division6-4A test, at Wingfield.
Terry 77, Brookhaven 72
Both teams used the opening 8 minutes to get a feel for eachother. Brookhaven (11-8, 2-1), coached by Ronald Hines, would takea slim 17-14 lead entering the second quarter. Hinds went with anew lineup Friday night, starting two later arrivals from thefootball team in Philip Tobias and Jimmy Johns, plus Jasper Hall,Rodney Daniels and Ganiero Richardson.
Terry (6-10, 1-3), beginning in the first period, authored a13-0 run to take a 27-17 advantage. Joe Willis and Jamaal Reynoldscombined for 12 points in the spurt. The Bulldogs, coached byReggie Magee, took a 37-29 lead into the halftime locker room.
Magee’s ballclub continued their high-powered offensive display,as Matthew Fortson and Jason Owens got into the scoring column. TheBulldogs held a 10-point lead, 56-46 entering the fourthquarter.
The Panthers, who trailed by as many as 16 points throughout thegame, made several attempts to come back in the final 8 minutes.Seniors Tobias, Hall and Daniels combined for 15 points in theperiod. But it would be the Panthers having to foul to stop theclock, plus Terry’s clutch free throws down the stretch that gaveBrookhaven their first division loss of the year.
Willis led all scorers with 28 points, including 4 treys.Fortson followed with 12 points.
Hall paced the Panthers with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Tobiasprovided 12 points and 10 rebounds. Daniels had 13 points, 3 stealsand dished out 11 assists. Ganiero Richardson had 3 assists.
Brookhaven committed 22 turnovers against 12 by the Bulldogs.The Panthers dominated the backboards 35-23.
Brookhaven 70, Terry 39
The Lady Panthers (11-8, 2-1) were off and running from theopening tip. Brookhaven opened the game with a 10-0 run and closedout the first quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 26-11 lead.
Terry (1-16, 0-3), coached by Phatasis Winfrey, could not findan answer for the towering presence of Lady Panther KristianMcCray.
McCray, a 6-foot senior, scored 7 of her game-high 20 points inthe second quarter. Brookhaven, under the direction of Coach BillyHolmes, posted a 38-20 lead at the intermission. McCray finishedwith 8 rebounds and 4 steals.
The Lady Panthers led 54-32 entering the final frame.
The Lady Bulldogs tried to counter with the streaky shooting ofMickea Hodges and Jasmine Mitchell. Both players combined for 16points in the game. Terry was forced into 38 turnovers, as the LadyPanthers converted several miscues into points.
Hodges led Terry with 9 points, followed by Mitchell with 7.
Lending support for Brookhaven was senior center Anna Autmanwith 12 points and 7 rebounds. Ashley Leggett had 15 points, 4steals and 3 assists. Chiquita Rancifer dished out 3 assists.Blanche Wilson had 3 steals.
In the JV boys game, Michael Byrd led Brookhaven to victory witha game-high 12 points. Terry got 9 points from Tim Washington.
