BA overpowers PCS Bobcats

The host Brookhaven Academy Cougars blew out the PresbyterianChristian School Bobcats 87-36 in District 4-AA varsity boysbasketball action Friday night.
In the varsity girls game, the undefeated Lady Cougars overcamea 9-8 first-quarter deficit to put away the Hattiesburg-based LadyBobcats 44-29.
The BA boys (21-2, 6-0) ambushed PCS in thefirst quarter for a 38-2 lead. At halftime, the Cougars roared to a56-13 advantage.
“Out of all my years of coaching, this was possibly the bestfirst quarter that my team played,” said BA boys coach DaleWatts.
Powering the Cougars with 18 points and four rebounds wasJonathan Winborne. Cole Hodges pumped in 15 points, collected sixrebounds, made five steals and had three assists. Jeremy Winbornenetted 12 points, made four steals and had four assists. Alsoscoring 12 points was Alan Gray.
“BA played much better than we did,” said PCS coach Mark Byran.”We hope not to play someone else that can kill us in the firstquarter as BA did. They played an excellent first quarter.”
Jeff McMullan led the Bobcats (10-11, 3-6) with 10 points.
The Lady Cougars (26-0, 8-0) went on a 17-8scoring spree in the second quarter and gave the hosts a 25-17advantage at halftime. BA exploded for a 13-2 run over PCS in thethird quarter to take a 38-19 lead into the final frame.
“Our post defense and full-court (press) was much better,”stated BA girls coach Barry Gray. “Our guards played well. We hadtoo many turnovers.”
The Lady Cougars were directed by guard Lauren Smith’s 13 pointsand four rebounds. Center Kristian Davidson scored 11 points,grabbed four rebounds and made four steals. Jessie Altman pulleddown five rebounds and made five steals.
“BA took us out of our rhythm,” said PCS girls coach MissyBilderback. “We could not get anything going offensively. BA is toogood.”
The Lady Bobcats (20-5, 6-2) got 12 points, seven rebounds andthree steals from Lori Bernardo.
Junior high action
The BA boys whipped PCS 77-46. T-Boy Lynch sparked the Cougarswith 29 points. Price Sessums netted 17 points, Sawyer Wallacefollowed with 13 points and Cory Bailey finished with 10.
Stew Deen and Colby Dozier netted 11 points each for theBobcats.
The 15-2 BA girls nipped PCS 25-24. Hannah Watts paced the LadyCougars with six points.
Elisa Holifield had 10 points for the Lady Bobcats.
Seventh grade action
The Cougars rolled over the Bobcats 53-20. Pacing BA with 20points was Kolby Byrd. Josh Winborne picked up 10 points.
John Caleb Grenn led PCS with five points.
The BA girls knocked off PCS 33-22. Directing the Lady Cougarswith 10 points was Nicole Smith.
Ashley Dewitt netted six points for PCS.
BA travels to Bowling Green in Franklinton, La.,Tuesday.
