Walker’s kick lifts LCHS over BHS Lady Panthers

Lawrence County goalie Cori Walker provided some offense Tuesdaynight on frozen King Field. Walker’s kick into the left corner ofthe net lifted the Lady Cougars to a bone-chilling, 1-0, 2-overtimewin over Brookhaven’s Lady Panthers in the second shootout.

Walker, a junior, returned to guard the net as Brookhaven’sMarion Patti , the fifth and final designated kicker for her team,attempted to tie the score at 2-2. Patti’s kick was wide right andLawrence County began celebrating on the frost-coated field.

Walker sprained her left ankle when a teammate stepped on herduring the rowdy celebration. She was helped off the field.

“This is the first time for Lawrence County to ever beatBrookhaven in soccer,” said a jubilant LCHS girls coach Cory Keys.”Our girls gave a great effort.”

Keys said this was Walker’s second year to play soccer. “She’sprobably our best athlete but we need her most on defense. We needto improve our offense.”

Walker said she was excited about the opportunity to score thewinning goal and wasn’t distracted by the frigid weather. “Myadrenalin was pumping. This is the hardest we have ever played. Wewere passing the ball really good. Our defense is improving,too.”

The Lady Cougars raised their record to 4-10. Brookhaven fell to6-11 and 3-6 in the division. The Lady Panthers lost seventh gradeforward Hannah Lowman to an ankle injury early in the game.

Late in the second 10-minute overtime, Brookhaven’s BrittanySmith launched a line drive at the net but Walker caught it on thefly.

In the first shootout, the Lady Cougars went up 1-0 on a KaylaGivens kick into the right corner of the net. Cheered on by herteammates, Brookhaven’s fifth kicker, Laura Waldrop, drove the ballinto the left corner to gain a 1-1 deadlock.

In the second shootout, Brookhaven goalie Lizzi Wilson made 2saves before Walker scored the winner. Brittany Hutchinson scoredfor LCHS and Cary Anne Rake scored for BHS to tie the score at1-1.

In the varsity boys game, the Panthers won 2-1as Tyler Alexander scored both goals in the comeback win. ThePanthers, coached by Kevin Bower, are 9-5 overall and 7-4 in thedivision. Brookhaven plays its final game against Jim Hill Fridayat Jackson’s Hughes Field. Action starts at 5:30.

“Brookhaven did a fine job,” said LCHS coach Rob Alford. “Ourkids played hard.”

Early in the match, the Cougars scored on a throw-in. KleinHarbour was credited with the goal when it caromed off a player’sleg and into the net. They led the Panthers 1-0 but Brookhaven tiedthe score at 1-1 by halftime as Alexander went to work.

Lawrence County hosts McComb Friday night at 5:30 and 7.

Panther Paws: Senior members of Brookhaven’ssoccer teams were honored last night between games. The LadyPanther seniors are Christi Autrey, Brittany Smith and LizziWilson. Senior Panthers are Sheldon Nations, W.T. King, ColtCovington, Jeffrey Dow and Nathan Kimmons.
