Grand jury returns 32 indictments

More than 30 indictments were handed down this week during thefirst grand jury session of the new year, Lincoln County CircuitCourt officials said.

Thirty-two indictments were issued during the two-day term thatended Wednesday. The indictments dealt with a variety of crimes,said Assistant District Attorney Diane Jones.

“There was a good bit of property crimes,” Jones said. “It seemsthere were more drug crimes than anything else.”

While not a majority, Jones said various drug crimes representedthe largest percentage of cases heard by the grand jury. Thirteenof the 32 indictments were drug-related.

“That’s probably always the case,” Jones said.

In addition to the drug crimes, Jones said there were a few DUIsand failure to support minor children charges.

Also on the list were two aggravated assaults, two simpleassaults on law enforcement officers, two burglaries ofautomobiles. There were single incidents of arson, forgery, grandlarceny, felony domestic violence and possession of a firearm by aconvicted felon.

Jones was prohibited from discussing specifics of any of thecases heard by the grand jury. The identities of indictedindividuals are not made public until they are served with courtdocuments.

Sheriff Wiley Calcote said his office is working on serving theindictments.

“We’re going to get them out just as fast as we can,” Calcotesaid.

Arraignment proceedings for the newly-indicted people arescheduled for Feb. 2, said Donna Lampton, court administrator forJudge Keith Starrett.

In deciding on indictments this week, grand jurors heard from 50witnesses. Three cases were continued for furtherinvestigation.

The next grand jury session is scheduled for March 29.
