BA teams overpower Adams Co.

Adams County Christian County School boys basketball coach andheadmaster John R. Gray came into an unusual situation Fridaynight. Gray returned to Brookhaven Academy where his son Barrycoaches the girls and his grandson Alan plays for the varsity boys.The gymnasium is named in Gray’s honor, recognizing him for over 25years of service at the school as coach and headmaster.

For the first half, Gray’s Rebels held their own against theBrookhaven Academy Cougars. Under veteran boys coach Dale Watts,the Cougars took over the game in the second half to produce a64-41 win.

In the girls game, the BA girls pushed their unblemished winningstreak to 31-0 following a 64-31 victory over Adams Christian.

“We didn’t play real well,” said Coach John Gray who is in hissecond year as headmaster and first as varsity boys coach at ACCS.”We’re not used to their (BA) quickness in the passing lane. Thiswill help us. The turnovers hurt us.”

ACCS took advantage of BA’s cold shooting in the first quarterand led 8-0 at the 5:08 mark. Cougar Jeremy Winborne ended the coldspell with a field goal and Cole Hodges nailed a three-point shotto cut the deficit to 8-5 with 3:19 left.

BA overcame the 13-9 first-quarter deficit with a 17-13 run onACCS in the second quarter to tie the game 26-26 at halftime.

The Cougars took off in the third quarter on layups and outsideshooting to lead 47-38 going in to the final frame. BA had betterplay on the backboards in the second half.

“This is the first time this year I have coached against someoneas old or older than I,” smiled Coach Watts. “He (Gray) always hassomething up his sleeve. His teams are prepared.”

Directing the BA boys (25-3) with 17 points and four steals wasJeremy Winborne. J.M. Winborne netted 13 points and had fiveassists. Alex Davis scored 12 points and led off the backboardswith nine rebounds. Hodges grabbed six rebounds, made eight stealsand had five assists.

ACCS (16-4) got a game-high 25 points from Glenn Williams.Dustin Case finished with nine points.

Brookhaven Academy 64, ACCS 41

In girls action, ACCS played BA close early in the first quarteruntil Lauren Smith nailed a field goal at the buzzer to push theLady Cougars’ lead to six points, 12-6.

BA exploded in the second quarter, using their half-court trapfor a 22-11 run and a 34-17 halftime lead. The Lady Cougars gotsupport from the bench in the second half, outscoring the LadyRebels 30-24.

“ACCS came out and played a slow game and good defense,” statedBA girls coach Barry Gray. ‘When we went to our half-court trap, wereally hurt them.

“We’re looking better. We’re looking more crisp. I was verypleased with this game.”

Smith powered the BA girls with 13 points, including three3-pointers, three steals and four assists. Kelli Byrd, MalloryLogan and Emily Langley fired in 10 points apiece. Byrd pulleddowns seven rebounds and made six steals. Langley collected fiverebounds and made three steals.

Leading the 15-11 Lady Rebels with 14 points was April Boyd.

Seventh grade games

Nicole Smith and Laura Lucas fired in six points each to leadthe BA girls to a 37-14 win over ACCS.

Kolby Byrd’s game-high 19 points helped the Cougars to a 54-36victory over the Rebels. Josh Winborne added support with sevenpoints.
