McCOMB – For the second consecutive game, the BrookhavenPanthers took an opponent into overtime. But the result Fridaynight in McComb High’s gym wouldn’t be the same.

The McComb Tigers, who used scorching defensive pressure andscoring from their bench, authored a 78-71 Division 6-4A overtimewin over Brookhaven.

Brookhaven hosts division foe Lawrence County Tuesday, inSinclair Gym. McComb hosts Jim Hill Tuesday for a divisiontest.

McComb 78, Brookhaven 71 (OT)

Brookhaven (12-13, 3-5) wanted to make a statementearly, taking a 16-12 lead into the second quarter.

Senior forward Jasper Hall scored the Panther’s final 10points (2 treys) in the opening 8 minutes.

McComb (18-6, 7-1), coached by Hilton Harrell, set thesecond period on fire. The Tigers outscored the Panthers 29-16, totake a 41-32 lead at halftime.

Hines’ ballclub opened the second half with a 9-0 run totie the game at 41-41 on a basket by Jermaine Culver. His teammatesoutscored McComb 21-15 in the quarter, but still trailed 56-53entering the final stanza.

The Panthers sent the game into overtime, with PhilipTobias sacking 4-for-4 free throws in the final minutes. Hallfinished with a career-high 32 points and 4 assists, while provided16 points, 21 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and 3 assists. RodneyDaniels had 3 steals, while Ganeiro Richardson dished out 3assists.

Tobias, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound senior, accounted for aschool-record 21 rebounds against McComb.

In the extra session, Brookhaven only scored 5 points inovertime on a trey by Hall and an inside basket byTobias.

McComb went 5-for-9 from the charity stripe, and tookadvantage of numerous Brookhaven turnovers throughout thegame.

“We committed too many turnovers,” said Hines. “Ourassist-to-turnover ratio was not very good.” He was referring tohis team’s 36 miscues, versus 20 assists byBrookhaven.

“We usually force about 30 turnovers a game,” said Tigerhead coach Hilton Harrell. “We played as a teamtonight.”

McComb was led by senior John Thompson with 23 points.Forward Chris Brock scored 21 of the Tigers 32 points off thebench.

In the JV boys game, McComb got 10 points from JeffreyMartin. Brookhaven’s Jerome Avery led all scorers with 11points.
