Services for Agnes Simmons Allen of Hazlehurst are 2 p.m.,Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Hazlehurst United Methodist Church withburial in Hazlehurst Cemetery.

Visitation is Tuesday from 5-7 p.m., at Stringer Family FuneralServices, and Wednesday from 1-2 p.m., at the church.

Mrs. Allen, 81, died Feb. 8, 2004, at Hardy Wilson MemorialHospital. She was born in Walthall County on Jan. 3, 1923, toAlbert Wallace Simmons and Ruby B. McElveen.

She was a 1940 graduate of Hazlehurst High School, and a 1942graduate of Copiah-Lincoln Junior College. She earned a Bachelor ofArts in Education degree in January 1944 from University ofMississippi, where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority andserved as Chapter President her senior year. Following graduation,she was employed by the federal government in Jackson in the U.S.Department of Agriculture until February 1946. On March 3, 1946,she married Stephen Ellis Allen Jr., and they moved to Universityof Mississippi, where he enrolled in the School of Law. While hefinished his degree, she served as secretary to the Dean of Womenuntil August 1947. The couple then moved to McComb, where sheworked at an insurance agency, and later to Jackson, where she wasemployed by USF&G insurance company for two years. In July1952, they moved to Hazlehurst, where he began his law practice of50 years. In later years, she worked as an assistant librarian atCovington City Library.

Survivors are her husband, Ellis Allen; her daughter, Lynn Greenof Jackson; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Gerald A. Ball

Services for Gerald A. Ball of Monticello are 11 a.m.,Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Monticello Baptist Church with burial in thechurch cemetery.

Visitation is Tuesday from 5-8 p.m., at Wilson Funeral Home.

Mr. Ball, 80, died Feb. 9, 2004, at Mississippi Baptist MedicalCenter in Jackson. He was born in Howison on March 8, 1923, toLeonard Daniel Ball and Mildred Rouse Ball.

He was former owner of Ball’s Clothing Store in Monticello from1968-1984, and he worked in management with Belk’s DepartmentStores/J.C. Penney’s in North Carolina and South Carolina. Heplayed Major League baseball. He was a member of Monticello BaptistChurch for 36 years, and served as a deacon. He was a World War IINavy veteran. While living in South Carolina, he was a member ofthe Lions Club and the Merchant’s Association, where he was aformer president, and he was a Mason.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Nelda ByrdBall; his sister, Bernice Howard; and a brother, Leonard Ball.

Survivors are his sons, Richard “Rick” G. Ball of Tupelo,Gregory “Greg” L. Ball and Jeff “Bull” Ball, both of Brookhaven,and Randall “Scotty” Ball of Madison; his brother, Dr. Ottis G.Ball of Jackson; and eight grandchildren.

Nell Allen Furlow

Services for Nell Allen Furlow of Brookhaven are 2 p.m.,Tuesday, Feb. 10, at New Sight Baptist Church with burial in NewSight Cemetery. Harrigill Funeral Home is in charge ofarrangements.

Visitation is Tuesday from noon until 2 p.m., at the church.

Mrs. Furlow, 85, died Feb. 8, 2004, at Haven Hall Nursing Home.She was born in Lincoln County on July 23, 1918, to Archie Allenand Katie Furlow.

She was a seamstress at Stahl-Urban Company, and was a member ofthe Baptist faith.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, twobrothers, three sisters, and a grandson, Mitchell Fauver.

Survivors are her daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret “Elaine”and Sherman Smith, and Geraldine and Donald Fauver, all ofBrookhaven; her sisters, Dorothy Jean Smith of Brookhaven, MaryRushing of Slidell, La., and Juanita Case of El Paso, Texas; sevengrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and twogreat-great-grandchildren.

Earl Benson “Ben” Jones

Services for Earl Benson “Ben” Jones of Madison are 11 a.m.,Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Wright & Ferguson’s Parkway Chapel withburial in Parkway Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation is Tuesday from 5-7 p.m., and Wednesday from 10-11a.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Jones, 71, died Feb. 8, 2004, at St. Dominic-JacksonMemorial Hospital. He was born in Attala County to Earl MorrisJones and Dorothy Jenkins Jones.

He worked in South Central Bell’s accounting department inJackson from 1957 to 1977, serving as district manager of dataprocessing. He began serving in 1977 as division manager of dataprocessing in Louisville, Ky., retiring to Madison in 1988. Heattended school in Durant, and graduated from Brookhaven HighSchool in 1950. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Hereturned from service in Korea in 1955, and completed his degree inaccounting at Mississippi State University in 1957. He was a memberof First Baptist Church of Jackson. He enjoyed gardening andspending time with his family. He was a former member of theOptimist Club in Jackson, and was active in the Telephone Pioneersof America during retirement.

Survivors are his wife of 48 years, Carolyn Mathis Jones,formerly of Brookhaven; his children and their spouses, Vicki JonesWaldrop and Carl of Ridgeland, Jennifer Jones Fairly and Dan ofBrandon, Jeffrey Mathis Jones and Debbie of Madison, and JohnMorris Jones and Rebecca of Columbus; his sister, Jeanette McVay ofHuntsville, Ala.; his grandchildren, Chad and Matthew Waldrop,Daniel and Christina Fairly, and Taylor and Cathrine Jones; andnumerous other relatives.

Gwin Arvin Nix

Services for Gwin Arvin Nix of Magee, formerly of Brookhaven,were 2 p.m., Jan. 29, at Tutor Funeral Home with burial in PineGrove Cemetery.

Mr. Nix, 73, died Jan. 27, 2004, at Magee General Hospital.

He was retired, and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Joe and Gladys Nix; anda brother, Udell C. Nix.

Survivors are his wife, Louise Hughes Nix of Magee; hisdaughter, Sally Britt Ogden of Brookhaven; his sons, Jim Nix ofWashington, D.C., and Webb Britt of Brookhaven; his sister, LorettaSmith of Brookhaven; his brothers, Dan Nix of Brookhaven, and JoeNix of Clinton; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Roseann Pennington

Mrs. Pennington, 101, died Feb. 6, 2004, at Lawrence CountyNursing Home. She was born on Oct. 24, 1902, to Robert Wilson andCivila Givens Wilson.

She was a homemaker. She was the oldest member of Pleasant GroveUnited Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, AlibyPennington; a daughter, Audrey Redd; two sons, Wilson Penningtonand Decell Pennington; two sisters; six brothers; and agranddaughter, Healther Smith.

Survivors are her son, A.J. Pennington of Monticello; herbrother, Bennett Wilson of Prentiss; 10 grandchildren; 16great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Olivia Stephens White

Mrs. White, 93, died Feb. 9, 2004, at Lawrence County NursingCenter. She was born in Silver Creek on June 7, 1910, to GeorgeWashington Stephens and Susann Sills.

She was a retired farmer and a homemaker. She was a chartermember of the Lawrence County Historical Society and a chartermember of the Lawrence County Rescue League. She was a member ofthe Wanilla Homemaker Club for over 50 years, and had been aWanilla resident since 1939. She was a quilt maker, and an activemember of Wanilla Baptist Church, serving in many ways.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; a brother,Thomas O. Stephens; a sister, Emma Robbins; and her son-in-law,Toxie Barber.

Survivors are her daughter, Helen Barber of Monticello; hersister, Mary A. Key of Manitou Springs, Colo.; her brothers, IsomStephens of Layton, Utah, George D. Stephens of Dalton Gardens,Idaho, and Ellis M. Stephens of Ross, Calif.; her grandchildren,Scott Barber and wife Jeannie Tynes Barber of Loyd Star, and BlakeBarber of Brookhaven; three great-grandchildren; and threegreat-great-grandchildren.
