Horents rip Bobcats; BC girls rally to win

BOGUE CHITTO — Loyd Star and Bogue Chitto met Thursday night inthe Calhoun Gym in the final regular season doubleheader for bothschools. It was Senior Night for the Lady Bobcats and Bobcats butthe hosts could only manage a split.

The Loyd Star Hornets put on a shooting clinic by sacking 9treys for a 90-63 thrashing of the Bogue Chitto Bobcats. The BogueChitto girls used an inside/outside combination to slip by the LoydStar Lady Hornets 47-42.

Both teams awaited the seeding process of their respectivedistricts which will take place this weekend. The Division 7-1Atournament gets under way Tuesday at Natchez Cathedral. TheDivision 6-2A tournament tips off Monday at Wesson.

Bogue Chitto 47, Loyd Star 42

“We had entirely too many turnovers,” said Lady Hornet headcoach Lori Britt. “We have to do a better job at the free-throwline. Britt was referring to Loyd Star’s 32 miscues and their11-of-26 performance at the charity stripe.

The Lady Hornets (14-11) took an 11-10 lead at the end of thefirst quarter. Junior point guard Jordan Britt tossed in 8 of hergame-high 19 points in the opening 8 minutes. Britt finished with 7rebounds, 3 steals and a pair of assists.

Bogue Chitto (22-7) countered with freshmen Kimberlee Thomas,scoring 8 of her team-high 12 points in the quarter. Thomas alsohad 8 rebounds.

The Lady Bobcats took charge in the second frame as reserveDanielle Sasser sacked a pair of treys. Head Coach Jason Kennedysaw his ballclub entertain a 26-20 lead at halftime.

Loyd Star outscored the Lady Bobcats 10-2 in the crucial thirdperiod to gain a 30-28 advantage heading into the final frame.Britt drained a pair of 3-point baskets while Bogue Chitto’s lonebasket came from senior guard Chasity Avants.

The Lady Bobcats would tie the game at 36-36 and take the leadfor good at 38-36 on a pair of baskets by Thomas. Bogue Chitto’sdefensive effort limited Loyd Star to only 3 baskets in the final 8minutes.

“This was an exciting game,” said Kennedy following the game.”This was a big win for us, especially over a county rival.”

Avants, along with Meleah Brown, tossed in 10 points apiece.Brown pulled down 7 rebounds. Avants dished out 6 assists and had 3steals.

Loyd Star got a 15-rebound performance from Ashton Williams.Shara Johnson followed Britt with 15 points and 8 rebounds.

Loyd Star 90, Bogue Chitto 63

Loyd Star’s scoring duo of Jared Britt and Tyler Williford puton a shooting clinic in the first half. Williford tossed in 18points, and Britt added 14 for Hornet head coach Gene “Moochie”Britt.

Williford sacked 4 treys as Loyd Star led 21-8 after one periodand 49-20 at the intermission.

“Loyd Star shot the ball extremely well tonight,” said Kennedy.”We just did not play well at all.”

With the game in hand, both teams emptied their respectivebenches in the second half. The Hornets entertained a 71-34 leadheading into the final stanza.

Britt tossed 18 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, had 3 steals anddished out 5 assists for Loyd Star. Brent Fells had 8 rebounds.Humphries had 6 assists.

Bogue Chitto was led by senior Michael Blackwell with 18 points,2 steals and 4 assists. Nicholas Smith had 4 assists. Aaron Gilland Irrie Catching each had 6 rebounds.
