Co-Lin women land in semis

BOONEVILLE — Led by Jones County’s shocking 80-77 Tuesday nightupset of nationally-ranked Northeast, the South Division continuedto make its presence felt in the Mississippi Association ofCommunity/Junior Colleges State Basketball Tournament. The Co-LinLady Wolves whipped Mississippi Delta 69-53, sparked by ReneeFields with 12 points and Dana King’s 11, landing a berth intonight’s semifinals as the South women swept the North in theopening round.
Co-Lin plays Jones tonight at 6 p.m. East Central faces GulfCoast in the other semifinals women’s game at 1 p.m. East Centraleliminated Itawamba 72-58 and Gulf Coast dumped Northeast 98-89Tuesday.
Today’s men’s semifinals send Jones against Pearl River at 3p.m. Northwest, the only North Division survivor, meets Hinds at 8p.m.
In men’s action, Northwest beat Gulf Coast 79-60, Hinds dumpedItawamba 87-77, Jones beat Delta 84-78 and Pearl River dumpedHolmes 90-75.
The Lady Wolves (17-7), seeded second in theSouth, got 10 points from Demetrice Jackson. They led the LadyTrojans 38-15 at halftime.
“Our intensity was really good,” said Co-Lin coach Gwyn Young.”Our defense took them out of what they wanted to run.”
Co-Lin stole the ball three times in the first 4 minutes of thegame.
Fields had 3 field goals and was 6 for 10 from the free throwline. King scored all 11 of her points in the first half when Deltawas in a zone defense, sacking 3 treys.
On the backboards, Victoria Richardson directed Co-Lin’s 43-23advantage with 13 rebounds. Travalyn Smith had 8 rebounds.
Guard Latishia Brown led Delta and all scorers with 17points.
Championship finals are Thursday, women at 6 p.m. and men at 8.The NJCAA Region 23 Tournament starts Monday at Mississippi Collegein Clinton.
East Central got 18 points from guard KristenChaney as the Lady Warriors (24-2) reached the semifinals. KotreeceBender and Rita Birden chipped in 11 points apiece.
