Jones County eliminates Lady Wolves

BOONEVILLE — The Jones County Lady Bobcats and the East CentralLady Warriors meet tonight in the women’s championship game of theMississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges StateBasketball Tournament. The women begin play at 6 p.m.

Wednesday night, Jones County eliminated the Co-Lin Lady Wolves65-53 and East Central dumped the Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs72-63.

In the men’s semifinals last night, Pearl River knocked offJones County 85-78 and Hinds upset Northwest 83-80. Pearl Riversquares off against Hinds in the men’s title game at 8.

The Lady Wolves (17-8) trailed the Lady Bobcats 29-20 athalftime. They had two previous wins over the Lady Bobcats thisseason.

“In the first half, we had many good looks at the basketbut could not make a shot,” said Co-Lin women’s head coach GwynYoung. “We also had too many turnovers that were careless on ourpart.”

The Lady Wolves improved play in the second half butcould not catch the Lady Bobcats.

“In the second half, we made a good run at Jones withabout 10 minutes left in the game but could not get closer thanseven points,” added Young. “Jones played a very good game andplayed hard. It was one of those games where everything we shot wasoff.”

Powering the Lady Wolves with 20 points and ninerebounds was freshman forward Travalyn Smith. Gloria Lewis netted10 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had three assists. LaurenWilliams was tops off the backboards with 12 rebounds.

Jones County got 23 points, four rebounds and foursteals from Brittany Baham. Natalie Jordan pumped in 18 points andpulled down five rebounds.

East Central 72, Gulf Coast 63

In the other women’s semifinals, Rita Birden paced EastCentral with 18 points. Scoring 15 points was Kristin Chaney.Ebonie Leverette followed with 14 points.

The NJCAA Region 23 Tournament will begin Monday atMississippi College in Clinton.
