BA eliminates Delta in Friday’ s semifinals

CLINTON — Delta Academy didn’t have enough depth to keep upwith the Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars. That’s what the LadyRaiders discovered Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the MPSAOverall Tournament, falling 59-41 in A.E. Wood Coliseum.
Guards Kelli Byrd and Mallory Logan directed the victory with 20and 19 points respectively. Senior forward Jessie Altman chipped in13 points.
In the other semifinals game, Leake overcame a 10-point deficitto eliminate Class AAA state champion Greenwood Pillow 54-49,powered by Kristin Caldwell’s 18 points and 10 rebounds.
“I felt like we had an advantage in size and our press wore themdown,” said Brookhaven Academy coach Barry Gray. “Delta is awell-coached team.”
The Lady Raiders were not at full speed due to a torn ACLsuffered by Ole Miss signee Lindsey Roy three weeks ago. Roy wore aheavy knee brace on her left leg and is scheduled for surgery inMarch. She scored 15 points and sacked 3 NBA-distance treys.
“I was surprised Lindsey (Roy) was so effective,” said Gray.”She’s a warrior.”
Brookhaven countered with Byrd and Logan providing the 1-2offensive punch. Delta took a 16-15 first-quarter lead before BA’sfull-court pressure began taking its toll. The Lady Cougars led32-24 at halftime and 43-35 entering the fourth quarter.
“Delta is real good but we had a good game plan,” said Byrd. “Wehad beat (56-43) them at our place,” in the Holiday Classic finals,Jan. 3.
Asked about her ability to penetrate opposing defenses, Byrdsaid, “I just try to find my way and go with it. The Lord hasblessed us with a good team.”
On the backboards, Byrd had 6 rebounds and chipped in 3 assists.Logan grabbed 7 rebounds and Kristian Davison 5. Lauren Smith made7 assists.
Brookhaven outscored Delta 16-6 in the fourth quarter. Byrd andLogan both scored 5 points in the run.
Point guard Graham Carson tossed in 13 points for the LadyRaiders. Megan Green added 10 points.
Delta (45-3), coached by Craig Dailey, ended its season as theClass A state champion. The Lady Cougars (42-0) advanced to thechampionship game for a rematch with Leake.
