CLINTON — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves are on their way to thesemifinals of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament following Mondaynight’s 70-60 win over the Delgado (La.) Lady Dolphins in A.E. WoodColiseum on the campus of Mississippi College.

Co-Lin (18-8) faces the Northwest Lady Rangers Wednesday at12:30 p.m.

In Monday’s other games, Northwest eliminated Jones County69-60, Northeast stuffed Gulf Coast 96-87 and East Central stoppedMississippi Delta 66-53.

East Central faces Northeast in the 2:15 game Wednesdayafternoon.

“We struggled offensively,” said Co-Lin women’s head coach GwynYoung of the first half. “We were waiting for someone to lead theway. People came in off the bench and got a couple of baskets. Wekind of got started after that.”

Delgado (14-15) led 16-8 when Co-Lin sophomore forward ReneeField scored a field goal to cut the deficit to six points, 16-10,with 9:34 left in the first half. The Lady Wolves jumped on theLady Dolphins for a 7-0 run to take their first lead, 17-16, at the7:31 mark.

Co-Lin and Delgado exchanged leads until freshman reserve guardDana King came off the bench to nail a three-pointer that put theLady Wolves up 20-18 with 6:49 on the clock.

The Lady Dolphins cut the deficit to one point, 22-21, at the5:41 mark. Fields nailed a two-pointer, freshman guard JessicaMelton hit a pair of free throws, sophomore forward VictoriaRichardson fired in a field goal, Melton came back with two morefreebies and freshman guard Gloria Lewis sacked a pair of freethrows to give Co-Lin a 32-24 lead with 3:23 on the clock.

At halftime, the Lady Wolves held a five point, 36-31, lead overthe Lady Dolphins. Co-Lin was 11 of 12 from the free throw line infirst-half action. Overall, the Lady Wolves finished the game going19-of-22 from the charity line.

“We shot the ball well from the free throw line,” saidYoung.

In the second half, Co-Lin opened with field goals from freshmanforward Travalyn Smith and sophomore forward Lauren Williams for aquick 40-31 lead at the 18:27 mark. Delgado managed to cut thedeficit to six points twice as Co-Lin maintained its lead and ledas much as 12 points, 56-44, with 10:11 left in the game.

“We went to our matchup zone defense,” explained Young of thesecond half play. “Then to man-to-man and back to the zone to keepthem off balance. We (players) talked well with each other. Wereally did a good job today. I was pleased with the effort afterthe first eight minutes.”

Directing the Lady Wolves with 16 points and three assists wasLewis. Fields finished the game with 15 points, scoring 10 in thefirst half. Adding support with 11 points was Melton. Tops off thebackboards with nine rebounds was Victoria Richardson followed byWilliams with six. Smith blocked four shots.

Freshman forward Meagan Stock paced Delgado with 19 points,including 3 treys. Kate Sterling finished with 16 points. CandiceGabriel led with five rebounds. Arrianna N. Smith coaches the LadyDolphins.

Young and his Lady Wolves prepare for a tough Northwest women’steam Wednesday.

“Northwest has a good bunch like they always do,” added Young.”One girl was ranked No. 6 in the country, averaging 24 points.Northwest can shoot 3’s and press. We’ll have to be ready toplay.”
