Lady Wolves sweep Miss. Delta

WESSON — Pitcher Ashley Davis and her Co-Lin teammates are on aroll. Davis pitched a 2-hitter in Thursday’s nightcap leading theLady Wolves to an 8-0 shutout of Mississippi Delta CommunityCollege in a fastpitch softball doubleheader.
Co-Lin (8-0) won yesterday’s sun-kissed opener 5-1 as pitcherKatie Rouch tossed a 6-hitter.
Davis, a sophomore right-hander from Monticello, requested twoice packs after the game, one for her throwing arm and the otherfor her left ankle. She had fractured her ankle last October duringan offseason, weight room accident.
“My screwball was working best today,” said Davis after strikingout 3 batters and walking none in the abbreviated 5-inning game. “Iwas throwing a changeup and rising drop ball, too.”
Davis (4-0) said the unbeaten Lady Wolves have a solid defensiveteam and they hit the ball well. “We don’t have any weak spots. Wehave a strong team.”
The Lady Wolves only committed 1 error in the sweep. Davisflirted with a no-hitter until the fourth inning when Delta’s ToshaChadwick doubled to the left-center field fence. In the fifth,Delta’s Dana Cobb singled to center but was left stranded.
Co-Lin head coach Allen Kent had watched his Lady Wolves sweepnationally-ranked Hinds Community College Tuesday at Raymond,scoring 22 runs and 33 hits. “Everybody is getting to play a lotand everybody is swinging the bat. Our defense and pitching werepleasing today.”
The Lady Wolves howled to an 8-0, third-inning lead. Theyfinished with 6 hits. Second baseman Ginny Dunaway and shortstopJessica Melton each had 2 hits in the victory.
In the first inning, a bunt by Rachel Breaux loaded the bases.Beth Smith drew a bases loaded walk and Co-Lin led 1-0. AshleyDavis delivered an RBI single and Smith scored on a passed ball,making it 3-0. Mandy Vinson slapped an opposite field single toright and it was 4-0. Melton’s blooper fell in behind shortstop andit was 6-0.
In the second, Breaux scored on a passed ball and Co-Lin led7-zip. In the third, Dunaway led off with a single and scored onMelton’s RBI grounder, making it 8-0.
Ashley Davis helped her cause with 3 RBI.
Freshman Brandi Blake was the losing pitcher as the Lady Trojansfell to 2-2.

In the opener, Rouch (4-0) fanned 3 batters and walked 3.
Co-Lin finished with 7 hits as Melton singled and tripled. Thirdbaseman Courtney Angel doubled and singled. Elise Dixon accountedfor 2 RBI and a single. Dunaway collected an RBI single and Beauxsingled.
The Lady Trojans got 2 singles from centerfielder LaquindolynEvans. They scored an unearned run in the seventh.
“Delta is much improved over last year,” said Kent. “Theirpitcher (Blake) is pretty strong. We tried to recruit her out ofLouisiana.”
Co-Lin resumes play March 22, after Spring Break, making up adoubleheader with East Central.
