Perkins powers BHS victory

JACKSON — In any given sport, the opening moments usually setthe tone for the rest of the game.
Brookhaven junior Darius Perkins authored a good day Fridayafternoon for the Panthers at Battlefield Park. Perkins, on a 1-2pitch, sent a fastball over the left field fence, helping thePanthers put the ream, steam and dry-clean to the Jim Hill Tigers17-0 in a Division 6-4A test.
Brookhaven continues Division 6-4A play Tuesday at Moyer Fieldwith the McComb Tigers. The JV game’s first pitch is set for 5p.m.
Brookhaven’s Jr. High Panthers host McComb Monday at 5 p.m.
Ole Brook (8-2, 5-0) would pound out 16 hits on the day againstJim Hill. The Panthers committed no errors for head coach RandySpring.
“We played as a team today,” said Spring who is in his fifthyear at BHS. “We hit the ball as a team.”
The Panthers would send 12 batters to the plate in the top ofthe first to garner a 6-0 lead, with the top 7 getting at least asingle. Along with Perkins’ 4-bagger, Xavier Qualls, Adam Ogden,Brooks Hall, Grant McDonnieal, Scotty Smith, W. T. King and JoshPatrick singled. Qualls, Ogden, Hall, McDonnieal, and Smithscored.
Spring’s ballclub plated 4 runs in the second, 5 runs in thethird and scored twice in the fourth.
Hall picked up the win for Ole Brook, allowing no runs, no hitsand 4 strikeouts in 2 innings. Matt Walker relieved Hall for thefinal 2 innings, allowing no runs on 3 hits.
The Tigers, coached by Greg Wilson, got singles from JeremyWilliams, Jonathan Buchannon and Jeffrey Moore.
Qualls led the Panther offensive with 3 singles, 2 runs scoredand 3 RBIs. Cody Dunaway and King doubled. McDonnieal and Smithscored 3 runs respectively. Patrick, Dunaway and King each scoredtwice.
James Curry suffered the loss for Jim Hill. He tossed 3 innings,allowing 15 runs (11 earned) on 15 hits, with 6 walks and nostrikeouts. Williams came on in relief in the fourth.
In the JV Game, Brookhaven beat Jim Hill 5-4.Stephen Smith was the winning pitcher.
Zach Watson tripled and scored for the Panthers. Brandt Hintonsingled.
